Job Specification

 ASSISTANT SEWER SUPERINTENDENT

 DEFINITION:

 Assists the Sewer Superintendent by performing varied supervisory
 tasks in the construction, maintenance, and repair of sewers  and
 keep needed records; does related work.

 NOTE: The  examples of work for this title are for illustrative
 purposes  only.  A particular position using this title  may  not

 EXAMPLES OF WORK:

 May  plan  and  supervise the work involved in the  construction,
 maintenance, and repair of sewers and catch basins.

 Coordinates  the  utilization of assigned  personnel,  equipment,
 materials, and supplies.

 Plans  and  assigns  work involved in the  periodic  cleaning  of
 storm, water, and sewer catch basins.

 May  supervise the repairing of broken sewer lines, replacing  of
 worn  parts  and  the installation of new sewer pipes  and  catch
 basins.

 May  inspect  the  construction of new  sewers  and  manholes  to
 evaluate   progress   and   to  insure   conformance   with   the
 specifications and blueprints.

 May  determine  the need for and type of material  and  equipment
 required to complete project.

 Confers  with  representatives of other  utilities  in  order  to
 coordinate  work  schedules for the most effective  and  economic
 repair activity.

 Write reports concerning manpower utilization, work progress  and
 disposition of materials.

 May  prepare  budget estimates based on anticipated material  and
 personnel needs.

 Makes investigations of complaints dealing with sewer repair  and
 maintenance  work  and takes proper action  to  see  that  needed
 repairs are made with a minimum of delay.

 May  make  surveys of needed sewer improvements and  repairs  and
 makes appropriate remedial recommendations.

 Obtains  and  supervises the storing, safeguarding,  and  use  of
 needed equipment, materials, and supplies.

 Prepares suitable reports.

 Keep  extensive records of time, costs, work done, and  materials
 used.

 May  supervise  workers  engaged in the operation  of  a  closed-
 circuit  television  monitoring system to  inspect  the  internal
 areas of sewer lines.

 Will  be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
 and/or  manual  recording and information  systems  used  by  the
 agency, office, or related units.
 REQUIREMENTS:

      LICENSE:

      Appointees may be required to possess a current and valid Public	
Wastewater Collections System Operator License and/or a Public
Water Distribution System Operator License of the appropriate
class issued by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.

      LICENSE:

      Appointees  will  be required to possess a driver's  license
 valid  in  NJ  only  if the operation of a vehicle,  rather  than
 employee  mobility, is necessary to perform essential  duties  of
 the position.

      EXPERIENCE:

      Two (2) years of supervisory experience in the construction,
 maintenance, and repair of sewers.


 KNOWLEDGEAND ABILITIES

 Knowledge  of  the  problems, procedures,  and  methods  used  in
 developing   a  suitable  work  program  and  working  procedures
 relating  to the construction, maintenance, and repair of  sewers
 and catch basins.

 Knowledge  of  the  methods  used in providing  the  coordination
 needed  to  assure  the  effective functioning  of  a  widespread
 organization.

 Knowledge of the problems involved in giving suitable assignments
 and  instructions  to groups and individuals and  in  supervising
 their work.

 Knowledge   of   the   methods  used   in   obtaining,   storing,
 safeguarding,  distributing, and supervising the  proper  use  of
 needed equipment, materials, and supplies.

 Knowledge  of  the  problems involved in  the  establishment  and
 maintenance of needed personnel, financial, equipment, and  other
 records.

 Ability  to  assist  in  the organization and  development  of  a
 comprehensive work program.

 Ability  to  take  the  lead in working out  effective  operating
 procedures.

 Ability to work harmoniously with others.

 Ability   to  give  suitable  assignments  and  instructions   to
 individuals  and  groups, provide them  with  needed  advice  and
 assistance when difficult and unusual problems arise,  and  check
 their  work  to  see  that proper procedures are  followed,  that
 reasonable standards of workmanship and output are maintained and
 that desired objectives are achieved.

 Ability  to  assist  in making the best use of  available  funds,
 personnel, equipment, and to keep needed records and files.

 Ability  to  utilize  various types of electronic  and/or  manual
 recording and information systems used by the agency, office,  
 or related units.

 Ability  to  read, write, speak, understand, and  communicate  in
 English   sufficiently  to  perform  duties  of  this   position.
 American  Sign  Language or Braille may  also  be  considered  
 as acceptable forms of communication.
