ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT OF RECREATION DEFINITION:
Assists the Superintendent in planning, promoting, organizing, and administering a recreation service for the community; acts as liaison at conferences, meetings, and other functions; does other related duties as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Assists the Superintendent in promotion and development program activities, personnel matters, and preparation of budget estimates.
Acts as liaison in the Superintendent=s absence, and assumes all duties, responsibilities, and authority.
Organizes, trains, and supervises subordinates, and provides advice/assistance in difficult and unusual problems.
In smaller jurisdictions, serves as general assistant, is responsible for recreation program leadership and administrative direction, and supervises playgrounds or recreation centers.
Prepares accurate, informative reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
May assist in establishment and maintenance of records of recreation activities and services, correspondence, personnel, and property.
Represents the Superintendent at meetings and conferences.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
NOTE: Applicants must meet one of the following or a combination of both experience and education. Thirty (30) semester hour credits are equal to one (1) year of relevant experience.
Seven (7) years of professional experience in recreation work involving planning, promoting, organizing, and/or directing a comprehensive recreation service or program for a community, three (3) years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.
OR
Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; and three (3) years of the above-mentioned professional experience which must have been in a supervisory capacity.
OR
Possession of a Master's degree in Recreation or in Parks and Recreation Management from an accredited college or university; and two (2) years of the above-mentioned professional experience which must have been in a supervisory capacity.
NOTE: "Professional experience" refers to work that is creative, analytical, evaluative, and interpretive; requires a range and depth of specialized knowledge of the profession's principles, concepts, theories, and practices; and is performed with the authority to act according to one's own judgment and make accurate and informed decisions.
LICENSE:
Appointees may be required to possess valid certification as a Recreation Administrator issued by the New Jersey Board of Recreation Examiners.
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of the philosophy of activities for a community recreation program.
Knowledge of budget estimates.
Knowledge of requisition and maintenance of recreation equipment, materials, and supplies.
Knowledge of maintenance of records and files.
Ability to assist in organizing, developing, and coordinating recreation activities of the jurisdiction.
Ability to assist administration of area and facilities comprising a recreation system.
Ability to give assignments and instructions, and supervise subordinates.
Ability to encourage interest and participation of children and adults in the program.
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with local governing authorities, agencies, and individuals.
Ability to prepare accurate, informative reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
Ability to assist in establishment and maintenance of records and files.
Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
