ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT OF WATER DISTRIBUTION
DEFINITION:
Assists the Superintendent in overseeing the maintenance and repair
operations of a water distribution system; does related work as required.
EXAMPLES OF WORK
Assists in overseeing the maintenance and repair operations of a water
distribution system and the installation of new services.
Assigns staff and equipment as necessary.
Checks progress of work and inspects finished work.
Resolves problems encountered by work crews.
Follows established emergency procedures when necessary.
Ensures that regulators maintain proper water pressure.
Cooperates with fire department to maintain water. pressure at
scene of fire. Makes fire flow tests for insurance companies.
Enters any changes in distribution system on system map.
Manipulates valves in system to divert with flow as required in
emergencies.
Plans, organizes, and assigns work of the organizational unit and
evaluates employee performance and conduct, enabling the
effective recommendation of the hiring, firing, promoting, and
disciplining of subordinates.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or
manual recording and computerized information systems used by
the agency, office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS
EXPERIENCE
Three years of supervisory experience in work involving the maintenance
and repair of a water distribution system, including water mains and pipes.
KNOWLEGE AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of the problems and approved procedures involved in
maintaining a municipal water distribution system.
Knowledge of the maintenance and repair of water mains, pipes,
meters, hydrants and pumps.
Knowledge of the methods used to assign and instruct staff involved
in the operation of a water distribution system.
Knowledge of the methods used in obtaining supplies and equipment
used in the repair and maintenance of the water distribution system.
Knowledge of the methods and procedures used in the Inspection of
water mains and pipes to discover any leaks and to note any need for
repairs.
Ability to analyze water distribution maintenance and repair problems,
organize assigned work and develop effective work methods and
programs.
Ability to give suitable assignments and instructions to subordinates
and supervise their work.
Ability to work harmoniously with associates, subordinates, and others
concerned with water distribution system maintenance and repair work.
Ability to conduct needed inspections and, when necessary, take
proper corrective action.
Ability to obtain, store, safeguard and supervise the use of needed
equipment, materials, and supplies.
Ability to prepare clear, accurate, sound, and informative reports
containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual
recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or
related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English
sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign
Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of
communication.
