Job Specification

COORDINATOR OF SOCIAL SERVICES  

DEFINITION:

Under direction, plans, develops, organizes and coordinates social service programs and related activities designed to aid residents in urban renewal project areas; supervises program activities and staff; does other related duties as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

Coordinates and administers social service components of redevelopment programs including urban renewal, code enforcement, and housing rehabilitation for residents of urban renewal project areas.

Coordinates, plans, and develops a public relations program which includes preparation of informational releases and promotional materials for community programs.

Investigates potential sources of local, state, and federal assistance to families, and recommends the most desirable and necessary programs.

Makes use of resources of other agencies and groups to make programs more effective.

Acts as liaison between planning and development, community groups, and other agencies in the development of cooperative relationships and specific courses of action.

Supervises staff engaged in program activities

Prepares correspondence.

Maintains records and files.

Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

REQUIREMENTS:

NOTE:Applicants must meet one of the following or a combination of both experience and education. Thirty (30) semester-hour credits are equal to one (1) year of relevant experience.

Seven (7) years of professional experience in guidance, social welfare, or psychological experience in a public or private agency or organization, one (1) year of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity.

OR

Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; and three (3) years of the above-mentioned professional experience, one (1) year of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity.

NOTE:"Professional experience" refers to work that is creative, analytical, evaluative, and interpretive; requires a range and depth of specialized knowledge of the profession's principles, concepts, theories, and practices; and is performed with the authority to act according to one's own judgment and make accurate and informed decisions.

LICENSE:

Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of the purpose, policies, standards, and procedures involved in community relations and social service programs.

Knowledge of problems and methods to be followed in coordinating social service programs.

Knowledge of the organization, objectives, and activities of varied types of public and private social agencies.

Knowledge of supervisory principles and techniques.

Ability to organize, develop, plan, and coordinate community relations and social service programs.

Ability to make and execute plans for effective utilization of available funds, personnel, equipment, materials, and supplies.

Ability to supervise assigned employees, provide them with needed advice and assistance, and review their work to ensure proper procedures are followed, reasonable standards of workmanship are maintained, and that desired objectives are achieved.

Ability to work harmoniously with associates, subordinates, other agencies and groups active in the field of social services and community relations.

Ability to prepare clear, accurate, and informative reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.

Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
