EXAMINER 1 CREDENTIALS DEFINITION:
Under direction, assists in reviewing and evaluating credentials of applicants and reviews, evaluates and interprets the requirements necessary for the various specialized professional occupations to include, but not limited to, medical examiners and doctors, attorneys, accountants, nurses, and dentists; provides information on certification/ licensure matters; does related work.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Reviews, interprets, and evaluates transcripts and/or other credentials of applicants for certificates/licenses.
May write to County Superintendents of Schools and notifies them of the results of the evaluation of the records of applicants under their jurisdiction.
In cases in which applicants do not qualify, specifies the amount of additional study required and the courses or areas of study that should be taken to meet the requirements.
Receives and prepares replies to requests for the several types of certifications/licenses.
Corresponds verbally or through writing with applicants and interested parties who wish to obtain an evaluation, or to appeal to reopen for further consideration and study, an evaluation of credentials already made.
May prepare letters to institutions requesting clarification when descriptions of college courses and/or related occupational programs are not completely clear in college catalogs and transcripts.
In cases wherein the evidence regarding an applicant's professional experience is not sufficient to make an evaluation of eligibility, or where matters of interpretation are in question, writes to the applicant or others for further information.
Assigns and instructs the work performance of support staff.
Recommends the issuance of certificates/licenses.
Prepares correspondence on certification/license requirements and related matters.
Compiles information for and assists in preparing statistical and other reports of the certifications/licensure program.
Assists in maintaining records and files.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
NOTE:Applicants must meet one of the following or a combination of both experience and education. Thirty (30) semester-hour credits are equal to one (1) year of relevant experience.
Five (5) years of professional experience in the review, analysis, verification, and evaluation of educational and/or related occupational credentials or applicant records, or education guidance counseling.
OR
Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; and one (1) year of the above-mentioned professional experience.
NOTE:"Professional experience" refers to work that is analytical, evaluative, and interpretive; requires a range of basic knowledge of the profession's concepts and practices; and is performed with the authority to act and make accurate and informed decisions.
LICENSE:
Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of the methods used to gather and analyze information.
Knowledge of the methods used to evaluate documents including transcripts, course descriptions, and related educational/vocational/ occupational materials.
Knowledge of interviewing techniques.
Ability to interpret college catalogs, course descriptions, and related occupational documents.
Ability to evaluate transcripts and academic records.
Ability to interpret evaluation findings of credentials and requirements to applicants and other concerned personnel.
Ability to comprehend, analyze, interpret, and apply basic rules and regulations in accordance with established procedure and policy.
Ability to review, analyze, and evaluate factual materials and to make tentative determinations of conformance with established regulations.
Ability to compile material for and assist in the preparation of reports of certification/licensure matters.
Ability to maintain records and files.
Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
