EXHIBIT ARTIST

A position in this category typically designs exhibits and displays; develops ideas
for exhibits, displays, promotions, or slide presentations; determines style, techniques,
and medium for graphic arts projects; organizes graphic art projects from conception
to completion; applies press type or other transfer lettering materials; makes (produces)
camera-ready copy; and sets-up art studio equipment.

Designs exhibits, displays, layouts of graphic or printed materials and models for
various exhibits and displays
Evaluates graphic design for style, arrangement, color, technique, and effect
Selects materials and suitable sites for exhibits or displays
Develops ideas for exhibits, displays, promotions, or slide presentations
Draws graphic material or lettering for title, backgrounds, or other layouts
Determines style, techniques, medium for graphic arts projects, format, size and
arrangement of forms
Organizes graphic arts projects from conception to completion
Plans workshops, seminars, lectures, exhibits and demonstrations
Checks working condition of art studio equipment
Monitors the use of materials, equipment, parts or supplies
Reads journals or other publications for the purpose of keeping abreast of
developments in the field
Estimates necessary quantity of time, costs, materials or personnel for the
accomplishment of assignments or goals
Applies press type or other transfer lettering materials
Makes (produces) camera-ready copy
Sets-up art studio equipment
Glues (pastes-up) material or copy for printed products
Manipulates (uses) proportion wheel for enlargements
Paints graphic material for art projects
Mixes paints such as tempera, watercolor, oil, or acrylic for artwork
Waxes (pastes-up) material or copy for printed products
Stores exhibit materials
Collects photos and cuts for graphics projects
Constructs models or other components of exhibits, projects, or TV productions
Calls (telephones) for needed services, materials or information

Knowledge of layout specifications for printing
Knowledge of the principles and techniques of copy preparation, composition
and layout
Knowledge of the techniques for applying commercial lettering to layout design
Knowledge of esthetic design
Knowledge of the advantages, disadvantages, potentials, and limitations of
art materials, media, and processes
Knowledge of graphic arts techniques such as pencil, pen, airbrush, watercolor,
show card, tempera, ruling, zipatone, artype, and craft-tint processes
Knowledge of principles of color theory
Knowledge of layout techniques
Knowledge of the principles of graphic arts design
Knowledge of the elements which make effective exhibits or displays
Knowledge of proper storage techniques for exhibits
Knowledge of the principles and techniques of exhibit design
Knowledge of methods used in handling and preserving art, natural history,
archeological, paleontological, or fossil specimens and objects
Ability to keep accurate records
Ability to critically analyze the effectiveness of an exhibit or display
Ability to produce finished artwork in varied media, including pencil, ink, charcoal,
oil, gouache, acrylic, watercolor, or tempera
Ability to use layout equipment and tools
Ability to mix color using gouache, watercolor, or oils
Ability to plan graphics arts projects
Ability to visualize spatial relationships
Ability to apply lettering techniques to art projects
Ability to follow written orders, directions or plans
Ability to follow oral orders, directions or plans
Ability to design models for exhibits or projects
Ability to construct models or other components for exhibits or projects
Ability to make models from aerial photographs

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION:
Completion of 30 college credit hours in the area of Art.
EXPERIENCE:
One (1) year of experience in work involving the production of finished artwork in
varied media, including the planning, design, and construction of exhibits and
displays.
SUBSTITUTION
Applicants who do not possess the required education may substitute additional
experience as indicated on a year for year basis (30 semester credits are equal
to one year).
LICENSE
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only
if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform
essential duties of the position.
