FIRE SIGNAL SYSTEM TECHNICIAN 1
JOB CATEGORY SUMMARY
A position in this job category typically installs, tests, trouble-
shoots, and repairs fire alarm systems, fire traffic signal systems and
wiring systems; installs and repairs overhead and underground cables;
and operates and tests radio communications equipment.

Tests fire alarm systems and fire traffic signal systems
Operates mobile and base station radio communications equipment
Operates a motor vehicle
Operates cherry picker, ladder, platform, or boom trucks
Operates volt or ohm meters
Repairs fire alarm systems and fire traffic signal systems
Repairs wiring systems, electrical components and conduit systems
Troubleshoots problems with wiring systems and electrical components
Repairs overhead and underground cables, and conduit systems
Installs overhead and underground cables
Installs fire alarm systems
Installs wiring and conduit systems
Operates hoisting equipment
Tests mobile radio communications equipment
Troubleshoots problems with fire traffic signal systems and fire alarm
systems
Tests wiring systems
Operates fire apparatus
Adjusts equipment to manufacturer's specifications
Relays fire alarms
Tests electronic circuitry
Applies appropriate safety procedures
Writes narrative letters or reports

Knowledge of the theory and principles of electricity
Knowledge of procedures for installing overhead and underground cables
Knowledge of procedures for testing wiring systems

Knowledge of procedures for installing fire signal systems

Knowledge of solid-state circuitry theory and principles
Knowledge of the theory and principles of electronics

safety or protection
Knowledge of procedures for operating fire suppression apparatus

Knowledge of procedures for operating volt or ohm meters

Skill in operating a motor vehicle
Ability to follow written orders, directions or plans
Ability to operate hand and power tools such as wrenches, screwdrivers,
pliers, wire strippers, drills, and tools associated with electrical
conduit and wiring work
Ability to operate hoists
Ability to follow oral orders, directions or plans
Ability to read various meters, gauges or dials
Ability to operate cherry picker, ladder, platform or boom trucks
Ability to troubleshoot problems with fire signal systems
Ability to repair underground cables
Ability to troubleshoot problems with wiring systems
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION:
Completion of a vocational, technical or specialized training
program in electrical or electronic technology.
EXPERIENCE:
One (1) year of experience in work involving the installation,
maintenance and repair of electrical or electronic components,
equipment or systems.
LICENSE:S, CERTIFICATIONS OR REGISTRATIONS
Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in
the State of New Jersey.
Appointee will be required to possess a valid Commercial Driver's
License (CDL) and applicable endorsements for the class and type of
vehicle being operated only if it is necessary to perform the
essential duties of the position.
Appointee may be required to possess a FCC General Radiotelephone
Operator License, Radio Industry Competency Certificate, or
equivalent license or certification specific to radio operation and
repair.
SUBSTITUTION
Applicants who do not possess the required education may substitute
one (1) year of additional experience.
