Job Specification

 GREENSKEEPER

 DEFINITION:

 Under direction, performs the specialized maintenance work required
 for the proper and efficient care of turf and land areas of a
 regulation golf course and operates specialized equipment designed
 specifically for golf course maintenance; does other related duties

 NOTE: The examples of work for this title are for illustrative
 purposes only. A particular position using this title may not perform
 all duties listed in this job specification. Conversely, all duties
 performed on the job may not be listed.

 EXAMPLES OF WORK:

 Performs a variety of maintenance tasks for the proper care of the
 tees, fairways, roughs, and greens.

 Operates various types of power mower equipment to mow greens 
 straight and true.

 Cuts roughs and fairways to the designated height.

 Sows seeds, replaces sod, removes weeds from the turf and sand traps,
 rakes sand traps, and may apply lime fertilizers, insecticides, and
 fungicides in the prescribed amounts.

 Uses the underground irrigation system to water tees, fairways, and
 greens.

 Top dresses, spikes, and aerates greens.

 Changes the pin location on the greens.

 Uses fairways leaf sweeper, removes refuse, and performs other chores
 to maintain the playing surface up to standards established for the
 sport.

 Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or 
 manual recording and computerized information systems used by
 the agency, office, or related units.

 REQUIREMENTS:

 EXPERIENCE:

 One (1) year of experience in the care and maintenance of a regulation 
 golf course.

 LICENSE:

 Appointees may be required to possess a current and valid
 certificate as a Pesticide Applicator, Commercial issued by the 
 New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.

 NOTE: Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license
 valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than
 employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the
 position.

 NOTE: Appointees may be required to possess a valid Commercial
 Driver's License (CDL) and applicable endorsements for the class and
 type of vehicle being operated.

 NOTE: The responsibility for ensuring that employees possess the
 required motor vehicle license, commensurate with the class and type
 of vehicles they operate, rests with the Appointing Authority.

 KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

 Knowledge of the methods used to care for golf courses.

 Knowledge of the methods used to prepare soil for planting.

 Knowledge of the methods used to care for specialized turf surfaces.

 Knowledge of the methods used to operated and maintain equipment.

 Knowledge of the methods used to apply fertilizers, insecticides, and
 fungicides.

 Ability to perform maintenance tasks in the cared of a regulation golf
 course.

 Ability to operate equipment used in golf course maintenance.

 Ability to maintain records.

 Ability to follow safety precautions in the use and care of equipment.

 Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual
 recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or
 related units.

 Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English
 sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign
 Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of
 communication.
