HOSPITAL CREDIT INVESTIGATOR
DEFINITION:
Under direction, performs field and office investigation work
involved in collecting delinquent patient accounts; does other
related duties as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Investigates financial status of patients or their responsible
relatives for the purpose of receiving payment of delinquent
accounts.
Secures information relevant to patient=s financial status such
as name of employer, salary, references, and financial
obligations.
Evaluates financial status and determines payment schedule based
on ability to pay and the hospital collection policy.
Accepts payments and issues receipts.
Recommends the placement of liens.
Makes recommendations as to referral of delinquent accounts to
the legal unit or collection agency for collection.
Investigates wills, letter of administration, insurance policies,
and assets to determine ability to pay.
Speaks with patients or their responsible relatives to obtain
voluntary compliance.
Attempts to locate patients whose accounts are delinquent and who
have moved without leaving forwarding addresses.
May appear in court to offer testimony.
Arranges partial payment plans.
Prepares correspondence.
Prepares reports.
Maintains essential records and files.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
and/or manual recording and information systems used by the
agency, office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
EXPERIENCE:
Two (2) years of experience in field investigations or
collections.
LICENSE:
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license
valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather
than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties
of the position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of collection work, hospital services and rates, and
policies related to collection activities.
Ability to carry out credit policies to prevent monetary loss.
Ability to maintain favorable relations with patients and their
relatives.
Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with patients.
Ability to make independent decisions.
Ability to prepare reports.
Ability to establish and maintain essential records and files.
Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual
recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or
related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in
English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.
American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as
acceptable forms of communication.
