Job Specification

INSPECTOR MOSQUITO EXTERMINATION

DEFINITION:

Under direction, performs field inspections to locate and identify mosquito breeding areas; does other related duties as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

Performs visual inspections of mosquitos in hiding or breeding areas (for example, ditches, private roads, or other similar areas where stagnant water exists) to site evidence of their presence.

Answers complaints and inquiries for the public by giving out basic information on government extermination efforts, mosquito breeding habits, and other related topics.

May apply approved chemicals and biological controls using protective clothing such as gloves, face masks, goggles, respirators, etc., according to specific manufacturer's directions.

Selects and applies different chemicals in designated areas according to appropriate methods and techniques using manual or power equipment such as pressurized spray pumps.

Drives truck or other automotive vehicle and follows road map or directions to answer a complaint or to reach areas needing inspection or fumigation.

Weighs, measures, and mixes chemicals and mediums according to specific directions to prepare commonly used insecticides for insects such as mosquitos.

Cuts brush using power saw or hand cutting tools to aid in the general effort to control and exterminate mosquitos.

May drive truck and use power spraying equipment to apply chemicals to designated areas.

Collects samples of insect larva for identification by supervisor or specialist.

Performs minor maintenance work on extermination equipment such as oil change, replacement of belts, and minor repairs to maintain equipment in working order.

Performs unskilled labor work in the absence of inspection and examination assignments.

Works with unskilled workers who assist with assignments such as spraying, loading equipment on trucks, and so forth.

Prepares clear and accurate reports.

Keeps essential records and files.

Will be required to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

REQUIREMENTS:

EXPERIENCE:

One (1) year of experience in mosquito extermination work.

LICENSE:

Appointees will be required to possess a driver’s license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

CERTIFICATION:

Possession of a current and valid certificate as a commercial pesticide applicator or a commercial pesticide operator issued by the New jersey Department of Environmental Protection may be required.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of methods used in applying insecticides and other materials used in the extermination and control of mosquitos.

Knowledge of surface water and the problems of drainage as they relate to mosquito control work.

Knowledge of operating hand power tools.

Knowledge of the proper use of equipment.

Knowledge of methods used in preparing accurate reports.

Knowledge of mosquitos including their basic physical characteristics in various stages of development, habits, living or breeding patterns, and their breeding areas.

Knowledge of the characteristics and purposes of commonly used insecticides and of the procedures used to select the appropriate ones.

Ability to weigh, measure, and mix chemicals while avoiding contamination to food and water sources and danger to people.

Ability to use manual or power spraying and fumigating equipment.

Ability to lift and/or carry materials and equipment weighing over 30 pounds.

Ability to carry out inspection to detect areas needing spraying and fumigation.

Ability to take and maintain a firm and correct stand.

Ability to work harmoniously with associates and others concerned with mosquito control and extermination.

Ability to keep simple records of areas and type of chemical or biological controls used.

Ability and skill in following street/road directions and maps.

Ability to learn how to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
