MACHINIST
ALL JURISDICTIONS
DEFINITION:
Under direction, operates varied types of machines used in
the layout, construction, maintenance and repair of parts of
equipment and machinery; does other related work.
NOTE: The examples of work for this title are for illustrative

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Prepares special parts for automobiles, trucks, institutional and
farm equipment and various types of road building and maintenance
equipment.
Installs, repairs and /or makes bearings, shafts, rods, housing,
discs, handles, bushings, hubs, keyways, gears and other parts
for machines and equipment.
Sets up, adjusts, repairs, maintains and operates lathes,
planners, shapers, milling machines, grinders, power hacksaws,
boring equipment, and specialized machines.
Prepares and/or works from specifications, blueprints and
sketches in accordance with accepted trade practices.
Provides precision measurements using micrometers, calipers,
gauges and protractors;
Prepares time and material estimates.
Inspects work in progress and completed work.
Machines worn shafts, gears, pistons, crank shafts and other
specialized parts; and does the work involved in the rebushing
of bearings, the reboring of cylinders and engines, and the
assembling and finishing of tools and equipment required for
experimental work.
Oils, cleans and installs new equipment.
Instructs inmates and/or others in the operation of the various
machines used in making and repairing parts for equipment
and machinery and takes the measures necessary to insure
their safety, custody, welfare and work progress.
Keeps records of equipment, materials and supplies used, time
spent and work completed.
May be required to undergo fire-training classes.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
and/or manual recording and information systems used by the
agency, office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
EXPERIENCE:
Three (3) years of experience in work involving the set up
and operation of lathes, milling machines, grinders, drill
presses, shapers, and/or other specialized machines and tools
used in machine shop work.
LICENSE:
Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license
valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather
than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential
duties of the position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of the procedures, materials, equipment and tools
used in preparing special parts for automotive vehicles, highway
maintenance machinery and equipment; and kitchen, laundry and
bakery machinery.
Knowledge of the competent and safe operation of lathes, shapers,
drill presses, milling machines, planers, and other specialized
machinery.
Ability to analyze assigned machine shop work and develop an
orderly work plan.
Ability to work with associates and those interested in or
concerned with the work of the machine shop.
Ability to operate lathes, drilling machines, grinders, drill
presses and other specialized machines.
Ability to read blue prints and work from sketches and drawings.
Ability to requisition, store, safeguard, record and use
equipment, materials and supplies.
Ability to observe established safety procedures.
Ability to maintain needed records of equipment, materials
and supplies used, time spent, work completed, and costs.
Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual
recording and information systems used by the agency, office,
or related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in
English sufficiently to perform duties of this position.
American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as
acceptable forms of communication.
