PRINTER
JOB CATEGORY SUMMARY
Positions in this job category typically lead a team or other
group of nonsubordinates in assigned print shop tasks, operate
presses, operate folding, binding, and cutting machines, operate
film processing equipment, and design graphic layouts for printed
material; does other related duties.
CHARACTERISTIC TASKS
NOTE: The above Job Category Summary and following examples of

Leads a team or other group of nonsubordinates in assigned tasks.
Operates offset presses, cutting machines, plate makers, and
binding machines.
Corrects mechanical binding products such as folding, stapling,
drilling, cutting, stitching, or padding.
Removes residue from film processing equipment and plate makers.
Sets up offset presses, plate makers, cutting machines, copiers,
and binding machines.
Strips negatives.
Adjusts offset presses.
Makes (burns) plates and negatives.
Corrects flaws in prints or negatives by various techniques such
as airbrushing, retouching, or opaquing.
Manipulates (uses) various drafting equipment such as T-squares,
compasses, or triangles.
Mixes chemicals or other solutions.
Corrects printing press problems such as tinting, scumming,
streaks, slow drying, or double images.
Inventories materials, equipment, parts, or supplies.
Arranges perishable stock by date received.
Designs layouts of graphic or printed materials.
Determines appropriate printing and graphic arts techniques.
Determines when printing requests should be sent to outside
vendors.
Selects ink.
Analyzes incoming print requests.
Identifies problems with printing equipment.
Estimates quantity of time, costs, materials, or personnel for
the accomplishment of assignments or goals.
Computes numerical data by addition, subtraction, division, and
multiplication.
Proofreads material for accuracy.
Interprets statistical information.
Verifies that quantity and type of item ordered matches invoice.
Determines feasibility of proposals or plans for additional
services.
Settles disputes, conflicts, or problems regarding program or
services.
Calms distraught individuals.
Mediates problems that cannot be resolved through other channels.
Provides technical information.
Answers routine questions.
Informs individuals of procedures necessary for completion of
forms or applications.
CHARACTERISTIC KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of procedures for setting up offset presses and plate
makers.
Knowledge of established safety procedures and guidelines.
Knowledge of chemicals and solutions used in printing and for
developing and fixing film.
Knowledge of printing techniques.
Knowledge of commercial printing plant operations.
Knowledge of the types and characteristics of printing and
graphic arts equipment.
Knowledge of procedures for cleaning plate makers and offset
presses.
Knowledge of procedures for producing negatives, papers plates,
and metal plates.
Knowledge of basic descriptive statistics.
Knowledge of record keeping procedures.
Knowledge of general vocabulary, spelling, and standard English
grammar; for example, syntax, punctuation, verb agreement, or
tense.
Knowledge of types and characteristics of printing inks.

Knowledge of procedures for operating copiers and binding
machines.

Ability to adjust offset presses, copiers, plate makers, and

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION:
Completion of an accredited vocational, technical, or
specialized training program in the printing trades with course
work including design and graphics as well as the operation of
typesetting, binding, and film processing equipment
EXPERIENCE:
Three (3) years of experience in work involving metal plate
and negative production, copy preparation, and the operations of
offset presses.
SUBSTITUTION
Applicants who do not possess the required education may
substitute one (1) year of additional nonsupervisory experience
for the required education.
