RECREATION PROGRAM SPECIALIST DEFINITION:
Under direction, is responsible for the organization and supervision of a variety of recreational and sociocultural activities at an indoor/outdoor recreation facility; conducts planned activities with assigned groups, implements programs for all ages, and initiates projects and reports on their progress; does related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK
Plans, develops, and implements a variety of recreational activities, and supervises the progress of each activity in or out of the facility.
Organizes trips, and supervises tournaments, socials, dances, exhibits, and special events.
Oversees assigned functional areas of the facility such as gymnasium, auditorium, athletic field, game room, or handicrafts.
Prepares reports concerning progress of proposals for programming, special problems, recommended actions, and related job situations and opportunities.
Oversees the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies.
Keeps essential records and files.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
NOTE: Applicants must meet one of the following or a combination of both experience and education. Thirty (30) semester hour credits are equal to one (1) year of relevant experience.
Five (5) years of professional experience e in planning, promoting, and developing a recreation program at a recreation or communy center.
OR
Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, and one (1) year of the above-mentioned professional experience.
OR
Possession of a bachelor's degree in recreation or completion of one (1) year of specialized graduate training in recreation.
NOTE: "Professional experience" refers to work that is creative, analytical, evaluative, and interpretive; requires a range and depth of specialized knowledge of the profession's principles, concepts, theories, and practices; and is performed with the authority to act according to one's own judgment and make accurate and informed decisions.
LICENSE:
Appointees may be required to possess a valid certificate as a Recreation Supervisor issued by the New Jersey Department of Community Affair
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of methods and problems involved in supervision of recreational programs that meet specific community needs.
Ability to promote and organize recreational activities for individuals and groups of all ages.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with participants, associates, and the public.
Ability to guide and encourage participation in recreations programs.
Ability to maintain essential records and files.
Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
