SANITATION SUPERINTENDENT
DEFINITION
Under direction, has charge of and supervises the work of
employees engaged in refuse collection and disposal; does other
related work.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Has charge of and supervises the work of employees engaged in
refuse collection.
Develops work plans and prepares or supervises the preparation of
routes for subordinates.
Investigates complaints from the public.
Supervises and is responsible for the proper use of needed
equipment, materials, and supplies.
Prepares reports.
Supervises the establishment and maintenance of records and
files.
Directs the operation of street cleaning crews in the removal of
refuse and bulk material from streets and curbs, vacant lots and
abandoned buildings.
Conducts or supervises field inspections to evaluate the
sanitation program and to determine that residents are complying
with relevant regulations.
Supervises workers engaged in investigating complaints concerning
sanitation matters.
Supervises the notifying of individuals of violations of relevant
regulations and initiates actions to obtain compliance with such
regulations.
Plans and directs snow removal activities including the salting
and plowing of streets.
Supervises and prepares reports of the activities of private
firms awarded contracts for the collection of refuse, the
cleaning of streets and snow removal.
Supervises the preparation of cost and operational reports.
Compiles budget estimates and prepares budget recommendations.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
and/or manual recording and information systems used by the
agency, office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
EXPERIENCE:
Five (5) years of experience in work involving the
collection and disposal of refuse, three (3) years of which shall
have been in a supervisory capacity.
LICENSE:
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license
valid in NJ only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than
employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of
the position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of the processes used in collecting municipal refuse.
Knowledge of the methods of routing trucks.
Knowledge of the varied types of equipment and tools used in
refuse collection.
Ability to direct subordinates and provide them with needed
advice and assistance when difficult and unusual problems arise.
Ability to check work performance to see that proper procedures
are followed, that reasonable standards of workmanship and output
are maintained, and that desired objectives are achieved.
Ability to handle complaints.
Ability to prepare reports, budget and cost estimates.
Ability to establish and maintain records and files.
Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual
recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or
related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in
English sufficiently to perform duties of this position.
American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as
acceptable forms of communication.
