Job Specification
SENIOR BRIDGE REPAIRER
DEFINITION:
Under supervision, performs work involved in the construction, repair
and maintenance of bridges and structures and/or takes the lead in
rough carpentry, masonry, welding or structural steel work; does other
related duties.
NOTE: The examples of work for this title are for illustrative

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Performs the more difficult tasks and/or takes the lead in raising,
placing and uniting structural steel members to form framework or
base of structure.
Renews and repairs headers, stringers, girders and caps, floor beams
and other bridge timbers.
Repairs bridges, bulkheads and culverts.
Builds and repairs pier and foundation timber, fenders, plank decks,
sidewalks, concrete stairways, and other parts of concrete and steel
structures requiring the construction of forms and mixing and placing
of concrete.
Erects and repairs bridge houses, tool sheds and other structures.
Renews and repairs steel bridge gates, iron fences and gates and pipe
rail fences.
Constructs asphalt and wood block decks, and granite block approaches.
Tightens, by bolting or riveting, steel headers, cover plates and
expansion joint plates.
Rivets and tightens loose parts in steel trusses, stiffening chords,
braces, buckle plates and posts.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
and/or manual recording and information systems used by the
agency, office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
EXPERIENCE:
One (1) year of experience in carpentry, masonry, painting,
iron and/or welding work involving a variety of construction
and maintenance tasks.
LICENSE:
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid
in New Jerey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee
mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
KNOWLEDGES AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of the methods and procedures used to erect rigging
and scaffolding.
Knowledge of the methods used to replace stringers, deck planks,
pilings and caps and other types of rough carpentry, masonry,
concrete and structural steel work required in bridge maintenance
and construction.
Ability to use, care for, and maintain the instruments, tools, and
equipment used in maintaining and repairing bridges.
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships
with coworkers and other involved in the work of the unit.
Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording
and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English
sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign
Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of
communication.
