SENIOR ELECTRICIAN
DEFINITION:
Under direction, performs the work involved in the installation,
maintenance, and repair of electrical wiring systems, fixtures,
controls, and equipment; takes the lead over one or more lower
level electricians; does other related duties as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Performs the work involved in the installation, maintenance,
and repair of electrical wiring systems, fixtures, controls, and
equipment and takes the lead over one or more electricians
involved in same.
Provides technical advice and assistance to other trade level
electricians engaged in the performance of a variety of electrical
tasks.
Examines work in progress to ensure the use of approved trade
practices.
Checks conformity of work with applicable plans, specifications,
and codes.
Inspects, analyzes, and provides guidance on the general
electrical work required in the repair, maintenance, and
construction of various electrical systems, high and low
tension power and light feeders, generating and control
equipment, and electrical equipment and appliances.
Prepares estimates of labor, materials, and equipment needed
for new or repair work.
Installs, modifies, repairs, and tests new and existing electrical
lines, circuits, systems, fixtures, controls, and equipment, such
as secondary distribution lines and circuits used to supply a wide
range of voltage, amperage, phase, and frequency requirements,
distribution panels, switchgear, power and control circuits, electrical
warning, detection and alarm systems, and high intensity lighting
systems.
Traces and locates electrical defects in electrical systems,
equipment, and appliances.
Plans and lays out the routing, placement, type, size gauge,
balance, load, continuity, and proper and safe operation of
electrical lines, circuits, systems, equipment, and controls.
Installs, modifies, repairs, and tests electrical systems,
circuits and devices.
Determines most suitable location, arranges, places, and routs
distribution panels, boxes, circuits, fittings, fixtures, connections,
and controls.
Determines and installs wiring, conduit, fixtures, transformers,
and other electrical devices of the proper size, type, and
arrangement needed for the safe functioning of electrical
systems, circuits, and equipment.
Installs, maintains, inspects, repairs, and services high and
low tension power and light feeders, generating and control
equipment, relays, transformers, motors, pumps, switches,
outlets, appliances, and signaling systems.
Operates test equipment such as ammeters, voltmeters,
and ohmmeters.
Troubleshoots malfunctions and breakdowns and makes
appropriate repairs or recommendations.
Prepares electrical schematics, plans, and specifications in
accord with the electrical code or accepted trade practices.
Inspects work in progress and completed work for defects,
fire hazards, or other unsafe conditions.
Prepares clear, technically sound, accurate, and informative
reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
Orders supplies and equipment.
Maintains essential records and files.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
and/or manual recording and information systems used by the
agency, office, or related units.
REQUIREMENT
EXPERIENCE:
Four (4) years of experience in electrical work involving a
wide variety of installation, maintenance, inspection, repair,
and servicing tasks.
NOTE: Applicants who do not possess the required experience
may substitute a current Electrical Contractor license issued by
the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs for three (3) years
of experience.
LICENSE:
NOTE: Appointees may be required to possess a current, valid
Electrical Contractor license, issued by the New Jersey Division
of Consumer Affairs. The responsibility for verification of licensure
rests with the Appointing Authority.
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license
valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather
than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties
of the position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of the equipment, and techniques involved in installing,
inspecting, repairing, and maintaining cables, wiring, motors,
generators, and a variety of electrical equipment and appliances.
Knowledge of the challenges generally encountered in the
performance of electrical work.
Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, and diagrams.
Ability to analyze problems involving electrical installation,
inspection, maintenance, and repair work and develop effective
work methods.
Ability to install, inspect, repair, and maintain cables, wiring,
motors, generators, pumps, and other types of electrical
equipment, appliances, fixtures, and circuits under varying
circumstances.
Ability to understand, remember, and carry out oral and written
directions.
Ability to give suitable assignments, instructions, and advice
to other workers.
Ability to take the lead over lower level electricians.
Ability to order, store, safeguard, and properly use equipment,
materials, and supplies.
Ability to observe the required safety precautions.
Ability to prepare clear, technically sound, accurate, and
informative reports containing findings, conclusions, and
recommendations.
Ability to maintain essential records and files.
Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual
recording and information systems used by the agency,
office, or related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate
in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.
