Job Specification

SENIOR EXTERMINATOR 

DEFINITION: 

Under direction, takes the lead in performing skilled work in the 
prevention, control and elimination of insects, vermin and other 
pests from buildings and surrounding areas; takes the lead over 
one or more lower level exterminators; performs other related work.

NOTE: The examples of work for this title are for illustrative purposes 
only. A particular position using this title may not perform all duties 
listed in this job specification. Conversely, all duties performed on 
the job may not be listed.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

Inspects premises to identify sources of infestation and extent of 
damage to property.

Under limited supervision, takes the lead over and provides guidance 
and instruction to lower level exterminators and others assigned to 
the unit.

Selects and prepares insecticides, rodenticides, bait and traps to be 
used in exterminations.

Mixes and distributes various insecticides, pesticides, materials and 
equipment to assigned exterminators.  

May coordinate the work activities of individual exterminators.

Oversees the prevention, control and elimination of insects and pests 
from buildings, interior and exterior surfaces and surrounding areas.

Obtains, stores, safeguards, records and properly uses baits, traps, 
sprays, and insecticides and pesticides.

Takes required precautions to protect extermination workers and 
clients from poisonous effects of extermination compounds.

Notifies supervisor of any difficult issues and makes 
recommendations for solutions.

Prepares reports and maintains accurate records and files of 
supplies, equipment, work progress and other related information.

May be required to drive a truck or other vehicle to or at work sites.

Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or 
manual recording and information systems utilized by the agency, 
office or related units.

REQUIREMENTS: 

EXPERIENCE: 

Two (2) years of work experience involving the prevention, control 
and extermination of insect and animal pests.

LICENSURE AND CERTIFICATION:

Appointees must possess valid licensure and certification as a 
Commercial Pesticide Applicator issued by the New Jersey 
Department of Environmental Protection. The Appointing 
Authority is responsible for certification and license verification.

Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in 
New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee 
mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: 

Knowledge of pest biology, habitats and breeding habits.

Knowledge of the habitats, habits and breeding extermination of 
bed bugs, cockroaches, house flies, rats, mice and other pests in 
buildings and surrounding areas.

Knowledge of extermination and inspection methods, insecticides, 
chemicals and equipment utilized in preventing, controlling and
eliminating insects, animal pests, vermin and rodents.

Ability to organize assigned work, analyze extermination problems 
and develop appropriate work methods.

Ability to accurately observe conditions of infestation existing in and 
around buildings and surfaces as they relate to the prevention, 
control and elimination of insects, vermin and pests.

Ability to determine the proper preventive and/or remedial measures 
to be taken in pest infestations.

Ability to effectively use bait, traps, sprays, and other devices with 
as little interference to daily routines.

Ability to lead and advise lower level exterminators and other 
employees engaged in pest control work.

Ability to oversee the use of sprays, dusts, baits, and other 
extermination preparations with due regard for their poisonous 
and/or irritant qualities.

Ability to prepare accurate reports and maintain the essential 
records and files.

Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording 
and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.

Ability to read, write, speak, understand and communicate in 
English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American 
Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable 
forms of communication.
