SENIOR INSTRUCTOR OF INSERVICE NURSING
DEFINITION
A Senior Instructor of Inservice Nursing is a registered
professional nurse who, under direction, organizes and develops
the theoretical and clinical inservice training of professional
and nonprofessional nursing personnel; performs responsible
duties which include planning and conducting classroom,
laboratory, and/or clinic instruction of concerned personnel; may
take the lead over subordinate instructors; does other related
duties as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Organizes, plans, and develops objectives and teaching schedules
for inservice courses in accord with principles as contained in
the Nurse Practice Act (NJ Department of Law and Public Safety).
Plans and prepares curriculum and outline of courses of
instruction, prepares and develops the preparation of classroom
lectures for theoretical classes, and organizes instruction for
clinical classes.
Reviews, selects, and organizes material for instruction.
Provides lectures and demonstrates new procedures for nursing
service.
Reviews written and oral reports of students' progress.
Assists instructors of nurses and other personnel involved in the
inservice training program with individual problems whenever
needed.
Attends conferences and workshops to consider administrative
problems and to revise and improve curriculum.
Approves requisitions for provision of books, teaching aids,
facilities, materials, and supplies for proper teaching of
assigned courses.
Maintains a dignified, professional approach to the nursing
profession and to teaching.
Prepares written and oral evaluations of teaching staff by review
of actual experience reports and observance of work, and conducts
classroom, laboratory, and/or clinic instruction of personnel in
various phases of the inservice training program.
Performs orientation of all new personnel to hospital routines
and basic procedures.
Schedules training programs for hospital attendants, nurses
aides, and practical nurses.
Prepares clear, sound, and accurate reports containing
recommendations and findings.
Supervises the preparation and maintenance of records and files.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
and/or manual recording and information systems used by the
agency, office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a
Bachelor's degree in Nursing or Nursing Education.
EXPERIENCE:
Two (2) years of experience as a registered professional
nurse.
LICENSE:
Current, valid registration as a Professional Nurse in the
State of New Jersey.
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license
valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather
than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties
of the position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of standard nursing techniques and procedures.
Knowledge of methods and principles of education, teaching
methods, and curricula content of all nursing specialties.
Knowledge of laws governing registry and training of nurses and
of policies and standards established by national accrediting
agencies.
Ability to understand, analyze, and interpret rules and
regulations.
Ability to comprehend and utilize principles and approved
procedures and techniques of nursing.
Ability to organize assigned administrative work, develop
effective work methods, and to work harmoniously with associates.
Ability to give assignments and specialized training to assigned
personnel and to provide them with advice and assistance when
difficult and unusual problems arise, to review their work to see
that proper procedures are followed, and that desired objectives
are achieved.
Ability to develop and maintain cooperative working
relationships, to work harmoniously with students, to use tact
and impartiality in dealing with them, and to arouse their
interest in subjects taught.
Ability to prepare and put into effect suitable work schedules.
Ability to prepare clear, sound, accurate, and informative
reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual
recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or
related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in
English sufficiently to perform duties of this position.
American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as
acceptable forms of communication.
