SENIOR PLUMBER
DEFINITION:
Under direction, performs general plumbing work involved in the
installation and maintenance of plumbing facilities and systems;
works with various machine and hand tools common to the plumbing
trade; may prepare or work from sketches, plans, and
specifications in accordance with the plumbing code or accepted
trade practices; takes the lead over and gives suitable
instructions to at least one (1) other plumber; does other
related duties.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Takes the lead over a small group of plumbers in installing,
repairing, and/or maintaining gas, water, and waste disposal
pipes, and facilities.
Trouble shoots malfunctions and makes emergency and permanent
repairs.
Removes stoppages from piping and toilet, sink, and other
facilities.
Works with wrought iron, cast iron, butt welded, soil, asbestos
composition, and copper pipe.
Installs and repairs piping systems using flanged, screwed, bell
and spigot, compression, and soldered joints.
May cover piping and fittings with asbestos or other
compositions.
Is familiar with the terminology, use and installation of
reducing, pressure relief, surge, check, float, gate, globe and
other types of valves, unions, sleeves, bushings, reducers, and
other fittings and valves.
Measures and fits piping and facilities.
Prepares and/or works from sketches, plans, and specifications
and roughing-in sheets in accordance with the plumbing code or
approved trade practices.
Interprets graphic symbols used on piping drawings.
Makes time and materials estimates.
Makes plumbing tests on work in progress and completed work.
Gives suitable instructions to other plumbers.
Keeps necessary records and files.
May be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
and/or manual recording and information systems used by the
agency, office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
EXPERIENCE:
Four (4) years of experience in plumbing work involving a
variety of layout, installation, and maintenance tasks.
NOTE: A valid Master Plumber license issued by the NJ State
Board of Examiners of Master Plumbers may be substituted for
(3) three years of related experience.
NOTE: Applicants may be required to possess a valid Master Plumbers
license issued by the New Jersey State Board of Examiners of
Master Plumbers as determined by the Appointing Authority.
LICENSE:
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license
valid in NJ only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than
employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of
the position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of the problems involved in plumbing work.
Knowledge of the standard tools, materials, methods, practices,
occupational hazards and safety precautions, and of keeping
necessary records.
Ability to understand, remember, and carry out oral and written
directions and assignments.
Ability to observe established safety procedures.
Ability to requisition, store, safeguard, distribute, and
properly use equipment, materials and supplies.
Ability to analyze problems involved in plumbing work, organize
assigned work, and develop effective work methods.
Ability to give suitable instructions.
Ability to establish and maintain suitable records and files.
Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or
manual recording and information systems used by the agency,
office, or related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in
English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.

communication.
