SENIOR PUBLIC INFORMATION ASSISTANT
DEFINITION
Under direction, performs the more responsible work involved in
helping to collect, put into proper form, and disseminate
informative materials including audio and visual communications
designed to aid the public information and publicity program of
the unit; does other related work.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
May gather informative materials concerning current and proposed
programs of the unit or jurisdiction.
May plan and coordinate various aspects of radio and television
programs.
Reviews production to ensure unit's objectives are attained.
Write scripts for radio and television presentation such as spot
announcements, cooperative broadcasts, or educational programs.
May substitute for the person conducting a radio or television
program.
May prepare and distribute news releases, speeches, films,
feature news stories, bulletins, pamphlets, circulars, and other
informational materials designed to acquaint the general public
with the functions, aims, programs, regulations, policies, and
procedures of the unit or jurisdiction.
Helps to compile, edit, and make drafts of materials to be used
in house papers and bulletins.
Helps to prepare posters, charts, graphs, exhibits, and other
visual aid materials.
Collects, compiles, and tabulates statistical and other
information and puts it into understandable form for the use
of the general public.
May attend meetings, conferences, committee hearings, and other
group meetings pertinent to the work of the unit or jurisdiction.
Prepares correspondence concerning public information and
publicity activities.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
and/or manual recording and information systems used by the
agency, office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
EXPERIENCE:
Two (2) years of experience in work involving the
collection, analysis, and dissemination of information in the
field of news, media, public relations, and/or advertising.
LICENSE:
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license
valid in NJ only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than
employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of
the position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of the methods and techniques involved in collecting
factual data.
Knowledge of the rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and
methods of the unit or jurisdiction, and their application to
specific cases.
Knowledge of public relations and advertising techniques and
devices.
Knowledge of the form and style required for press releases for
print, radio, and television.
Knowledge of the sources from which significant information may
be obtained.
Ability to assist in preparing informative articles and news
releases for publication via the media of print, radio, and
television.
Ability to review and edit written material, and to proofread
copy.
Ability to maintain records and files.
Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual
recording and information systems used by the agency,
office, or related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in
English sufficiently to perform duties of this position.
American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as
acceptable forms of communication.
