SENIOR PUMPING STATION OPERATOR
DEFINITION:
Under direction, takes the lead over Pumping Station Operators;
operates, adjusts, regulates, and maintains water and/or
sewage pumping station equipment used for the conveyance,
transmission, or distribution of wastewater for treatment or
disposal and/or the transfer of raw water to treatment plant,
and/or the distribution of treated water to residential, commercial,
or industrial establishments; does related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Organizes assigned work and develops effective work methods.
May take the lead over Pumping Station Operators and/or
perform the more difficult work involving the operation of
Pumping Station equipment.
Operates, maintains, and makes minor repairs to pumping
equipment to transfer raw water or sewage to treatment plant,
or distribute processed water to residential, commercial,
and industrial establishments.
Operates and maintains chlorinators, meters, and communitors.
Turns valves, pulls levers, and flips switches to operate and
control turbine, electric motor, combustion, or diesel driven
pumps that transfer water from reservoir to treatment plant,
or transfer processed water to consumer establishments,
or transfer sewage from homes, industrial, or commercial
establishments to sewage treatment plant.
Reads flowmeter and gauges to regulate equipment according
to water consumption demand or wastewater (sewage) flows.
Inspects equipment to detect malfunctions such as pump leaks
or worn bearings.
Repairs and lubricates equipment using handtools.
Takes periodic readings of flowmeters, pressure gauges,
gasoline or diesel meters, thermometers, and other recording
equipment.
Records data such as utilization of equipment, power consumption,
and water output in log.
May install, maintain, repair, and observe proper operation of
electrical motors and generators, electric motor controls, and
electronic and telemetry equipment .
May use a computer telemetry system to detect possible problems
in the overall water system operation.
May operate equipment to treat and process raw water.
May operate mechanical or hydraulic sewer cleaning equipment.
May test water for chlorine content, alkalinity, acidity, or
turbidity to determine potability of water following color
analysis standards.
May obtain sewage samples and transport the samples for
analysis by others.
May enter manholes, syphon chambers, and wet and dry wells
to perform routine maintenance and cleaning of the system or
equipment.
Regulates and adjusts the flow and pressure of water by
starting and stopping pumps or by opening and closing valves.
May adjust chemical feed systems for control of odors.
Keeps the working areas, pumping stations, and surrounding
grounds in a clean and sanitary condition.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
and/or manual recording and computerized information
systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
EXPERIENCE:
One (1) year of experience in operating, adjusting, regulating,
and repairing pumps, valves, compressors, and other equipment
used for the conveyance, transmission, distribution, or treatment
of water and/or wastewater.
LICENSE:
Appointees may be required to possess a current valid license
of the appropriate class issued by the New Jersey Department
of Environmental Protection to operate a public wastewater
collection system and/or public water distribution system.
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license
valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather
than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential
duties of the position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of procedures used in operating, adjusting,
regulating, and maintaining pumping station pumps,
valves, and other equipment.
Knowledge of methods used in checking the flow and level
in sewage storage chambers.
Knowledge of methods and problems involved in taking
accurate readings of flowmeter, pressure gauges, thermometers,
and other recording apparatus.
Knowledge of the use of odor control materials.
Ability to take the lead over lower level Pumping Station Operators.
Ability to understand, remember, and carry out oral and written
directions.
Ability to operate, adjust, regulate, maintain, and make minor
repairs to electrically, combustion, or diesel engine driven
centrifugal pumps, flowmeter, indicators, sump pumps, and
other mechanical and electrical pumping equipment.
Ability to check and adjust the flow and levels in sewage
storage chambers.
Ability to maintain pumping stations in sanitary and neat
condition.
Ability to take accurate readings of flowmeter, pressure
gauges, thermometers, and other recording apparatus.
Ability to determine whether the equipment is working properly.
Ability to understand the significance of various gauges.
Ability to keep essential records.
Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or
manual recording and information systems used by the
agency, office, or related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate
in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.
American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered
as acceptable forms of communication.
