SEWAGE PLANT REPAIRER
DEFINITION
Under direction, makes repairs to pumps and other machinery and
equipment of a sewage treatment plant; does other related duties
as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Lubricates machinery and equipment utilizing hand and power
operated greasing equipment.
Adjusts belts, gears, and related systems in accord with
manufacturer's specifications.
Checks oil and lubricant level regularly and adds correct type of
oil or lubricant as needed.
Performs routine examinations and adjusts equipment to
manufacturer's specifications accordingly.
Makes routine and complex repairs to sewage disposal mechanical
equipment including replacement of washers, gaskets, and packing,
and makes complex repairs to sewage pipe lines including
replacement of valves, fittings, and pipe sections.
Makes general repairs to buildings including carpentry,
replacement of broken windows, repair of concrete and other
walks, and painting of walls, window screens, and storm sashes.
Repairs, adjusts, regulates, and maintains chemical feed
machines, chlorinators, sludge digestion pumps, flowmeters, and
other mechanical equipment.
Helps clean bar screens, removes sludge from drying beds, cleans
and adjusts filter bed spraying nozzles, disposes of waste, and
maintains the area in a clean, sanitary condition.
Obtains, stores, safeguards, and properly uses tools, equipment,
materials, and supplies.
Keeps essential records of repairs made, time spent, and costs.
May operate sewage treatment equipment to control flow and
processing of sewage in addition to performing sewage plant
repair duties.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
and/or manual recording and information systems used by the
agency, office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
EXPERIENCE:
One (1) year of experience in work involving the maintenance and repair
of a variety of complex industrial mechanical equipment such as
pumps, compressors, hydraulic or flow valves, instrument control
panels, generators, electric motors, and piping systems.
LICENSE:
Appointees may be required to possess a current and valid
Public Wastewater Systems Operator License and/or a Public Water
Treatment System Operator License of the appropriate class issued
by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license
valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather
than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties
of the position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of problems and procedures involved in making repairs
to sewage disposal pumps, equipment, and machinery.
Knowledge of procedures used in repairing, adjusting, regulating,
and maintaining chemical feed machines and chlorinators, sludge
digestion pumps, flowmeters, and other sewage treatment
mechanical equipment.
Knowledge of performing preventative maintenance tasks.
Knowledge of methods used in cleaning sewage screens and beds.
Knowledge of the skilled use and care of needed tools, materials,
and supplies.
Ability to repair, maintain, and operate sewage treatment
mechanical equipment.
Ability to diagnose motor troubles and overhaul motors.
Ability to change oil and lubricate motors.
Ability to rebuild motors and clean and wash equipment.
Ability to work harmoniously with others.
Ability to perform complex mechanical and manual operations.
Ability to keep essential records and files.
Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or
manual recording and information systems used by the agency,
office, or related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in
English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.
American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as
acceptable forms of communication.
