SIGNAL SYSTEMS TECHNICIAN 1
JOB CATEGORY SUMMARY
A position in this job category typically installs, tests,
troubleshoots and repairs traffic signal equipment or systems and fire
traffic signal systems, fire alarm systems, traffic counters and wiring
systems; and operates cherry picker, ladder, platform, or boom trucks.
CHARACTERISTIC TASKS

Operates a motor vehicle
Operates cherry picker, ladder, platform, or boom trucks
Repairs traffic signal equipment or systems, fire traffic signal
systems, fire alarm systems, police warning light systems and traffic
counters
Installs traffic signal equipment or systems, fire traffic signal
systems, fire alarm systems and traffic counters
Troubleshoots problems with fire traffic signal systems, fire alarm
systems, traffic signal equipment or systems, and traffic counters
Tests fire traffic signal systems and fire alarm systems
Repairs electronic balances
Repairs wiring systems, electric motors, electrical components, conduit
systems, underground cables and overhead cables
Installs wiring systems, underground cables, overhead cables,
electrical components, electric motors and conduit systems
Repairs base station and mobile radio communications equipment
Tests wiring systems
Troubleshoots problems with wiring systems
Repairs audiovisual equipment
Lubricates equipment, parts, systems or subsystems
Applies established security procedures and guidelines
Recommends the purchase of new and replacement materials, equipment,
parts and supplies
Calls (telephones) for needed services, materials or information
Provides technical information

Knowledge of the theory and principles of electricity
Knowledge of procedures for testing wiring systems and electrical

Knowledge of solid-state circuitry and transistor theory and principles

Ability to repair underground cables

Ability to interpret abbreviated measurement values
Ability to operate cherry picker, ladder, platform or boom trucks
Ability to troubleshoot problems with traffic counters
Ability to repair traffic counters
Ability to troubleshoot problems with fire signal systems
Ability to troubleshoot problems with traffic signal equipment or
systems
Ability to read various meters, gauges or dials
Ability to measure frequency ranges
Ability to follow written orders, directions or plans
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION:
Completion of a vocational, technical or specialized training
program in electrical or electronic technology.
EXPERIENCE:
One (1) year of experience in work involving the installation,
maintenance and repair of electrical or electronic components,
equipment or systems.
LICENSE:S, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS
Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in
the State of New Jersey.
Appointee will be required to possess a valid Commercial Driver's
License (CDL) and applicable endorsements for the class and type of
vehicle being operated only if it is necessary to perform the
essential duties of the position.
Appointee may be required to possess a FCC General Radiotelephone
Operator License, Radio Industry Competency Certificate, or
equivalent license or certification specific to radio operation and
repair.
SUBSTITUTION
Applicants who do not possess the required education may substitute
one (1) year of additional experience.
