SUPERINTENDENT MOSQUITO EXTERMINATION
DEFINITION:
Under direction, coordinates and directs the administrative and
operational activities involved in mosquito control and
extermination; does other related duties.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Plans and directs mosquito extermination and control operations.
Develops and implements mosquito extermination and control plans,
programs and methods.
Provides suitable assignments and instructions to subordinates
and supervises their work. performance.
Provides information for program budget.
Conducts studies of mosquito breeding areas.
Plans and directs proper drainage, water management and chemical
control procedures and the handling, use and application of
various pesticides.
Coordinates mosquito control and extermination programs.
Collects, analyzes and interprets data regarding the propagation
and control of mosquitoes.
Prepares reports.
Establishes and maintains records and files relevant to mosquito
extermination and control operations.
Supervises the use of protective clothing and equipment.
May apply and/or supervise the selection and application of
different chemicals in designated areas according to appropriate
methods and techniques using manual or power equipment.
May weigh, measure, and mix chemicals and mediums according
to specific direction.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
and/or manual recording and information systems used by
the agency, office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION:
A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
in the biological sciences.
EXPERIENCE:
Five (5) years of experience in mosquito extermination work,
including three (3) years in a supervisory capacity.
LICENSE:
Possession of a current and valid certificate as a
commercial pesticide applicator or a commercial pesticide
operator issued by the New Jersey Department of Environmental
Protection may be required.
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license
valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather
than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential
duties of the position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of the methods used to develop, supervise and
coordinate a mosquito extermination and control program.
Knowledge of the methods used to conduct biological studies.
Knowledge of the methods used to apply insecticides and other
materials used in mosquito extermination and control.
Knowledge of surface water and drainage relating to mosquito
control work.
Knowledge of the proper use and operation of extermination tools
and equipment.
Knowledge of the physical characteristics of mosquitoes in
various stages of development, their living and breeding habits,
and breeding areas.
Knowledge of the characteristics and purposes of commonly used
insecticides.
Ability to plan, direct and coordinate mosquito extermination and
control operations.
Ability to read, and interpret laws, rules and regulations and
apply them to specific situations.
Ability to provide assignments and instructions to subordinate
staff, and supervise the performance of their work.
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working
relationships with associates and others.
Ability to weigh, measure and mix chemicals and mediums according
to directions.
Ability to apply chemicals in a manner which will avoid
contamination to food and water sources and danger to people.
Ability to use manual or power spraying and fumigating equipment.
Ability to lift and/or carry materials and equipment weighing
over 30 pounds.
Ability to conduct inspections and identify mosquito breeding
areas.
Ability to maintain records of types of chemical or biological
controls used and treatment sites.
Ability to prepare reports.
Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual
recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or
related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in
English sufficiently to perform duties of this position.
American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as
acceptable forms of communication.
