NURSING SERVICES CLERK
DEFINITION
Under the direction of a supervisory nursing employee in charge
of a hospital or health care facility nursing unit performs
general clerical duties by preparing, compiling, and maintaining
necessary records in the unit; does other related duties.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Assembles new charts and completes identifying patient data.
May chart temperature, pulse, respiration, and other data on
graphic charts.
Records other data on patients' chart as instructed.
Writes requisitions, laboratory tests, and routine procedures as
directed; presents all completed forms to nurse in charge.
Files laboratory and consultation reports on patients' charges
after they have been reviewed by nurse in charge.
Notifies Dietary of changes in patient census, special diets.
Makes charts available for medical and nursing rounds.
Routes charts when patients are transferred or discharged from
the unit, after checking records for completeness.
Makes file census of patients; maintains other essential unit
files.
Acting as receptionist, receives and directs visitors.
Checks supply list against supplies on hand and order routine
supplies as needed.
Writes requisitions or makes phone calls for maintenance repairs
and housekeeping problems.
Prepares daily time sheets and keeps records of absences and
hours of work by unit personnel.
Dispatches mail, newspapers, and messages to the nursing unit or
to other unit personnel only those calls which he/she cannot
handle.
Compiles and maintains as assigned, patient records, schedules,
reports and surveys for the unit, distributes to appropriate
offices and/or individuals when so directed.
Maintains neat and orderly bulletin boards on the unit, posts new
material and removes outdated material from bulletin board and
files if indicated.
May receive, record, and deposit patient money as instructed.
May be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
and/or manual recording and information systems used by the
agency, office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
EXPERIENCE:
One (1) year of experience performing clerical work in a
medical or long - term care facility or office.
LICENSE:
Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license
valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather
than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential
duties of the position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of medical terminology.
Ability to be tactful and diplomatic in dealing with patients,
vistors, doctors, and co-workers.
Ability to be discreet in handling confidential information.
Ability to spell simple words correctly.
Ability to type well enough to complete simple forms and submit
simple reports.
Ability to accept responsibility and to complete tasks with
minimal supervision.
Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or
manual recording and information systems used by the agency,
office, or related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in
English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.
American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as
acceptable forms of communication.
