SUPERVISING ENGINEERING AIDE
DEFINITION
Under direction, supervises and coordinates activity of an
engineering aide unit and performs highly responsible field and
office tasks involved in surveying and/or inspecting construction
operations; does other related duties as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Supervises and coordinates field crews including taking
attendance, issuing work assignments, and assigning workers to
specific crews.
Reassigns personnel and crews as needed.
Reviews survey field books for completeness/accuracy.
Makes field visits to survey parties to determine progress of
work conditions, problems, and productivity.
Assumes responsibility for field books, their indexing, and
maintenance of field book street indexes.
Assumes responsibility for survey office and its maintenance.
Supervises performance rating of survey personnel.
May assist field engineers in preparing building set-ups and
making form inspections.
Maintains status reports on present/proposed survey work in a
filing system.
Maintains an inventory of equipment.
Requisitions survey supplies as needed.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
and/or manual recording and information systems used by the
agency, office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
EXPERIENCE:
Five (5) years of engineering experience involving the
performance of inspections, surveys, tests, drafting,
mathematical computations, or other engineering work., one (1)
year of which shall have been a supervisory capacity.
NOTE: Possession of a Bachelor's degree in Engineering from
an accredited college or university may be substituted for four
(4) years of indicated nonsupervisory experience.
LICENSE:
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license
valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather
than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties
of the position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of characteristics and properties of materials used in
road and other engineering construction activities.
Knowledge of procedures involved in making routine inspections.
Knowledge of the use of engineering instruments and other
apparatus used in road and other types of engineering work.
Knowledge of problems involved in making mathematical
calculations.
Knowledge of the proper use of the transit, plan table, and
level.
Knowledge of procedures for preparing estimates of contract
progress.
Knowledge of basic supervisory techniques.
Ability to organize assigned work and develop effective work
methods.
Ability to give assignments and instructions to engineering
aides.
Ability to prepare reports.
Ability to maintain records and files.
Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual
recording and information systems used by the agency, office,
or related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in
English sufficiently to perform duties of this position.
American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as
acceptable forms of communication.
