SUPERVISOR OF WATER DISTRIBUTION
DEFINITION
Under direction, plans and supervises the work involved with the repair and maintenance of the
water mains, branch piping, and other components of a water distribution system; is responsible
for the care of the grounds containing water distribution installations; does related work as required.
EXAMPLES OF WORK
Plans and supervises the maintenance program for the water distribution system.
Oversees repair operations including the excavation work, caulking, welding and other functions
required to correct faults in the system.
Oversees the installation of additional equipment and piping for the potable water services.
Checks the work performed to make certain that the layout of the piping and other components, the
materials used, and the workmanship are in accordance with the plans and specifications for the
project.
Takes suitable precautions to protect the grounds, equipment and facilities of system.
Periodically inspects the water installations to determine their condition.
Traces leaks and supervises personnel making emergency repairs.
Checks water to determine if it is potable.
May be responsible for the installation, reading and repair of all water meters in the network.
Supervises the requisitioning, storing, utilization, and safeguarding of needed equipment and
supplies.
Gives appropriate assignments and instructions to subordinates.
Prepares suitable reports.
Is responsible for maintaining pertinent records and files of personnel, equipment, materials, work
performed, and time allocated to various projects.
Participates in the preparation of yearly estimates of the personnel, equipment, materials and
supplies that should be adequate to maintain the water distribution system in good condition.
REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION
Ability to read, write, speak and understand English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.
EXPERIENCE
Two years of supervisory experience in the construction, maintenance, repair and inspection of
water distribution facilities.
LICENSE
Applicants may be required to possess a license of an appropriate grade to operate a public water
supply system issued by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.
KNOWLEDGES AND ABILITIES
Wide knowledge of the technical problems and appropriate procedures in planning and
supervising the work program for the maintenance, repair and installation of the piping, pumps,
regulators and meters of a water distribution system.
Of the uses of varied types of specialized equipment, and tools.
Ability to organize assigned work, develop effective work methods and to give, suitable instructions
and assignments to men engaged in water department repair and maintenance activities.
To take appropriate remedial action when problems arise.
To obtain, store, safeguard and supervise the use of needed equipment, materials, and supplies.
To estimate the need of personnel, equipment, materials, and supplies for future operations.
To prepare clear, accurate, and pertinent reports, and to maintain needed records and files
Ability to read, write, speak and understand English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.
