WATER TREATMENT PLANT SUPERINTENDENT
DEFINITION
Under direction, plans, organizes, directs, coordinates, and
is responsible for activities involved in the operation,
maintenance, and repair of an entire water treatment
facility; does related work.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Is responsible for administration, operation, and maintenance of
a water treatment facility.
Supervises plant functions and personnel.
Inspects plant.
Analyzes and evaluates operation and maintenance functions.
Develops plans and procedures to ensure efficient plant operation.
Recommends plant improvements and additions.
Coordinates data and assists in preparing or reviewing and approving
operation reports and budget requests.
Controls expenditure of budgeted funds and requests
approval for major expenditures.
Prepares specifications for major equipment and material purchases.
Organizes and directs activities of plant personnel, including
training programs.
Directs the operation, maintenance, repair, improvements and
expansion of the water treatment plant.
Provides assignments and instructions to staff and supervises their
work performance.
Prepares reports.
Supervises the establishment and maintenance of records and files.
Maintains effective communications and working relationships with
employees, government officials and the general public.
Directs the operations, maintenance, repair, improvements and
expansion of the water treatment plant.
Is responsible for the treatment and quality of the effluents discharged
from the water treatment plant.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or
manual recording and information systems used by the agency,
office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
EXPERIENCE:
Five (5) years of experience in the operation adjustment, repair,
maintenance, and regulation of water plant pumps, valves, electric
motors, and other electrical and mechanical equipment used in a
water treatment plant, pumping station or filtration plant, two (2)
years of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity.
NOTE: Applicant may be required to possess a valid Wastewater/Water
System Operator's license of the appropriate class issued by the
New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.
LICENSE:
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in
New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee
mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of the processes and equipment used in a water
treatment facility.
Knowledge of the problems encountered in the operation and
maintenance of a water treatment facility.
Knowledge of the factors and conditions to be considered in the
inspection of a water treatment plant facility.
Ability to plan and coordinate work activities of a water treatment
plant facility.
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships
with those interested or involved in the work of the facility.
Ability to identify needed plant improvements.
Ability to interpret a variety of technical instructions.
Ability to prepare work schedules.
Ability to prepare reports.
Ability to provide assignments and instructions to staff and supervise
the performance of their work.
Ability to establish and maintain records and files.
Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording
and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in
English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American
Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable
forms of communication.
