Job Specification

  YOUTH GROUP WORKER

  DEFINITION:

   Under direction, supervises and conducts group and individual
   activities designed to benefit juveniles with behavioral problems;
   does related work as required.

   NOTE: The definition and examples of work for this title are for

   NOTE: Appointments may be made to positions requiring bilingual skills.

   SPECIAL SKILL
   Applicants must be able to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate 
   in Spanish and English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.

  EXAMPLES OF WORK:

   Organizes, supervises, and conducts various activities for a group 
   of juveniles with behavioral problems.

   Attends and participates in staff meetings to plan individual and 
   group programs.

   Monitors and records individual and group actions and behavior
   during planned activities.

   Prepares reports concerned with individual and group behavior.

   Organizes, supervises, and participates in recreational and social
   activities for groups and individuals.

   Implements various plans and programs to aid juveniles with
   problems of adjustment.

   Conducts individual and group counseling to discuss emotional
   and behavioral problems facing juveniles.

   Assists juveniles in resolving personal problems by using
   counseling techniques.

   Assist juveniles in developing improved sense of responsibility 
   towards themselves and society.

   Consults with other agencies and parents when necessary.

   Prepares reports.

   Maintains essential records and files.

   Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or
   manual recording and computerized information systems used by
   the agency, office, or related units.

   REQUIREMENTS:

   EDUCATION:

   Graduation from an accredited college or university with a 
   Bachelor's degree in Sociology, Psychology, or related fields.

   EXPERIENCE:

   One (1) year of experience in professional counseling and
   guidance or in professional work in the fields of teaching, social
   welfare, or medical social services.

   NOTE: Graduation from an accredited college or university with
   a Master's degree in a related field may be substituted for
   experience.

   LICENSE:

   Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in
   New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee
   mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

   KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

   Knowledge of psychological and social problems of juveniles.

   Knowledge of social, economic, and psychological causes of 
   deviant behavior.

   Knowledge of interviewing and counseling techniques.

   Knowledge of government and private agencies that can afford help
   in rehabilitating juveniles.

   Knowledge of problems involved in dealing constructively with
   personality disorders, social behavior, and social relationships.

   Ability to organize assigned work and develop effective work
   methods.

   Ability to utilize modern counseling and guidance techniques to 
   understand the individual limitations of juveniles.

   Ability to interview juveniles who may be emotionally upset and
   antagonistic.

   Ability to prepare clear, sound, accurate, and informative reports
   containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.

   Ability to maintain essential records and files.

   Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual
   recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or 
   related units.

   Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English
   sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign
   Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of
   communication.
