Job Specification

RECOVERY ASSISTANT DETOXIFICATION UNIT

 DEFINITION:

 Under  close  supervision,  performs  supportive  functions   and
 assists  in  preparing  alcohol abusers for rehabilitation  while
 working  in  a  detoxification unit or center;  collects  factual
 information  from  clients,  observes their  physical  condition,
 participates in groups interaction sessions, and assists  in  the
 joint  treatment  planning for clients and  on  occasion  may  be
 required  to perform a variety of housekeeping work;  does  other
 related duties as required.

 NOTE: The definition and examples of work for this title are for
 illustrative  purposes only.  A particular  position  using  this

 specification.  Conversely, all duties performed on the  job  may
 not be listed.

 EXAMPLES OF WORK:

 Collects factual information from clients suffering from  alcohol
 abuse,  records  information on prepared intake forms  to  gather
 data on their personal history, alcohol problem, and so forth for
 use in establishing the treatment plan.

 Develops  a  treatment plan for the client giving information  on
 observations of client's  physical condition  such  as  whether
 client  is  suffering from withdrawal, disorientation,  or  other
 symptoms, and provides medical and personal history and so  
 forth to present all necessary information needed for treatment plan.

 Reviews  treatment plan with client explaining the plan  and  its
 objectives to receive their consent to implement the plan.

 Informs  client  on alcohol symptoms that they may  be  suffering
 from,   explains  expected  reactions,  suggests  way  to  reduce
 anxieties  caused  by  symptoms,  and  explains  consequences  
 of continued abuse of alcohol to aid the rehabilitation process.

 Participates  in group discussion sessions with  clients  or  has
 individual  sessions, listens to their problems,  observes  their
 behavior,  suggests  alternatives,  or  recommends  agencies  for
 services  needed  to  aid client in dealing with  alcoholism  and
 problems that occur from alcoholism.

 Performs  a  variety of housekeeping assignments by working  with
 clients at the center such as cleaning, mopping, and so forth  to
 maintain the premises in a presentable manner.

 Maintains  and keeps current records, charts treatment  progress,
 keeps activity schedules, checks records for completeness, and so
 forth to keep appropriate persons informed of client=s status and
 activities.

 Advises clients on available resources, arranges appointments for
 them   to  attend  outpatient  centers,  follows  up  on   client
 activities after they have left detoxification unit, and so forth
 to aid in their rehabilitation.

 Acts  to  ensure  proper care is maintained in the detoxification
 center  by  assisting clients when complications occur pertaining
 to  their alcoholic symptoms and so forth to assist during a time
 of crisis.

 Receives  inservice training, which are aides  for  working  with
 alcoholic  clients, to gain an understanding of  the  nature  and
 scope of alcoholism and for learning treatment modalities.

 Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or  
 manual recording and information systems used by the agency, 
 office, or related units.

 REQUIREMENTS:

      LICENSE:

      Appointees  will  be required to possess a driver's  license
 valid  in  New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle,  rather
 than  employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties
 of the position.

 KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

 Knowledge of problems encountered in working with alcoholics  and
 of problems faced by alcoholics.

 Knowledge of social and community agencies available to assist in
 the prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of alcoholics.

 Ability   to   remain   calm  in  emergency  situations,   follow
 established  procedures, and possess a sympathetic  understanding
 of the conditions and problems of alcoholics.

 Ability  to  present  facts, opinions, and resources  in  such  a
 manner  that  listeners  can apply this to  their  situation  and
 respond accordingly.

 Ability   to   prepare   clear,  accurate,  informative   reports
 containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.

 Ability to maintain essential records and files.

 Ability   to   work   harmoniously  with  associates,   families,
 individuals, and social organizations.

 Ability  to  utilize  various types of electronic  and/or  manual
 recording and information systems used by the agency, office,  
 or related units.

 Ability  to  read, write, speak, understand, and  communicate  in
 English  sufficiently  to perform the duties  of  this  position.
 American  Sign  Language or Braille may  also  be  considered  as
 acceptable forms of communication.
