Job Specification

TRAFFIC CONTROL OFFICER

 DEFINITION:

 Under direction, performs the routine duties of directing traffic at a
 major intersection or where assigned; does other related duties.

 NOTE: The examples of work for this title are for illustrative
 purposes only. A particular position using this title may not perform
 all duties listed in this job specification. Conversely, all duties
 performed on the job may not be listed.

 EXAMPLES OF WORK:

 Directs traffic at a major intersection or where otherwise assigned.

 Directs traffic by standing at an intersection and changes the traffic
 light by pushing an electric button.

 Stands in the middle of street or intersection and directs traffic by
 hand.

 Responsible for the safe and effective flow of traffic.

 Oversees the removal of stalled or damaged vehicles that would cause a
 traffic tie-up.

 Assures the safety of pedestrians crossing an intersection.

 May clear a path for emergency vehicles when necessary.

 Provides information and directions to pedestrians or motorists.

 Issues summons to illegally parked vehicles during hours when signs
 are posted prohibiting parking.

 REQUIREMENTS:

      LICENSE:

      Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid
 in NJ only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee
 mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

 KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

 Knowledge of the problems and procedures involved in directing
 traffic.

 Knowledge of the procedures used in keeping records.

 Knowledge of taking reports of conditions and actions in accordance
 with state procedures.

 Ability to understand, remember and carry out oral and written
 directions.

 Ability to analyze routine problems.

 Ability to organize assigned work and develop effective work methods.

 Ability to report significant conditions and action taken.

 Ability to establish and maintain records.

 Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording
 and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

 Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English
 sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign
 Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of
 communication.
