Job Specification

DIRECTOR, TRAILSIDE NATURE AND SCIENCE CENTER 

DEFINITION:

Under direction plans and supervises the collection and display of exhibits at the trailside nature and science center; organizes nature study groups and plans programs of scientific lectures at the center; does related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

Plans and organizes the resources of the museum to provide maximum opportunity to the public to use the resources of the museum and its facilities.

Reviews programs and modifies them to achieve services to the public.

Makes recommendations for the expansion of the facilities and for new facilities.

Plans programs and arranges for speakers and special shows.

Prepares and presents lectures, demonstrations and exhibits.

Develops and recommends budget for the center.

Plans and organizes and supervises the work of employees and trains them in their duties.

Prepares reports.

Maintains records and files.

REQUIREMENTS:

NOTE: Applicants must meet one of the following or a combination of both experience and education. Thirty (30) semester hour credits are equal to one (1) year of relevant experience.

Six (6) years of professional experience in the preparation and care of exhibits or collections in a museum, including or supplemented by at least thirteen (13) college credits in the natural sciences.

OR

Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, including or supplemented by at least thirteen (13) college credits in the natural sciences; and two (2) years of the above-mentioned professional experience.

OR

Satisfactory completion of at least sixty (60) college credits from an accredited college or university, eighteen (18) of which shall have been in any of the natural sciences; and four (4) years of the above-mentioned professional experience.

NOTE: "Professional experience" refers to work that is creative, analytical, evaluative, and interpretive; requires a range and depth of specialized knowledge of the profession's principles, concepts, theories, and practices; and is performed with the authority to act according to one's own judgment and make accurate and informed decisions.

LICENSE:

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of the purposes and operation of a nature study center and collection of exhibits and of the problems involved in its operation.

Knowledge of the preparation of exhibits.

Knowledge of the care of the collections.

Knowledge of the maintenance of suitable records.

Ability to work harmoniously with superiors, associates, subordinates and the general public.

Ability to direct the design, preparation, installation and maintenance of suitable displays and to make the best use of available space, funds, personnel and equipment.

Ability to present lectures and demonstrations in the natural science appropriate to the general public.

Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
