Job Specification
SENIOR COMMUNITY AIDE, SCHOOLS 

DEFINITION: 

Under supervision, performs the more responsible non-professional field and office work and/or 
may take the lead over one or more Community Aides, Schools in interpreting the role of the 
schools and related program to parents and community members; does related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: 

Arranges for the conducting of workshops at various schools for parents of children that are 
educationally and socially deprived in order to inform them of the education program's provisions, 
services, and other functions offered within the school system.

Compiles and collects basic information and material to help the school involve the parents in the 
activities of the children.

Coordinates community wide conferences with parents in order to involve them in their children's 
education.

Conducts meetings with parents and interprets and explains the various provisions of the education 
program so that they are able to help their children at home.

Meets with parent groups and helps individual parents resolve problems with their children by 
making referrals to appropriate persons in order to have problem corrected.

Compiles information about the educational program and prepares literature for distribution to the 
parents, informing them of the program and showing them basic skills to be used at home in 
helping their children with their school work.

Conducts various workshops for parents of school children.

Confers with local parent council chairpersons and aids them in developing the skills and 
knowledge needed to function effectively in their positions.

Confers and works with school principals, teachers, guidance and other professional staff, as well 
as parents and other concerned individuals regarding problems affecting the students' progress 
and achievements, behavior, personal well¬being or other school-related problems they may be 
experiencing.

Assists in the interpretation of school and program policies, regulations or activities to the students 
and their parents.

Serves as liaison between the parents and the school district and with social agencies committed 
to the welfare of the student.

Develops rapport with students, their parents and school officials in the interest of promoting the 
proper adjustment and progress of the students.

In some work situations the Senior Community Aide, Schools in addition to or independent of the 
functions described above may exercise "leadership" over the work performed by other employees 
by performing most of the leadership responsibilities described below:

Distributing and balancing the workload among employees in accordance with established work 
flow or job specialization, assuring timely accomplishment of the assigned workload, and that each 
employee has enough work to be kept busy.

Observing the status and progress of the work and making necessary adjustments in accordance 
with established priorities.

Notifying the supervisor as to the works progress and status and requesting advice or needed 
information as to problems that arise, passing on to the other workers the instructions received 
from the supervisor, and demonstrating proper work methods.

Answering questions of other workers as to procedures, policies, regulations, and instructions and 
instructing them in specific tasks and job techniques, checking on work in progress and completed 
to see whether the supervisor's instructions have been carried out properly.

Answering question of the supervisor on overall work operations and problems.

Giving on-the-job training to new employees in accordance with established procedures and 
practices and informing them of available services and agency regulations.

Resolving simple informal complaints of employees and referring all others to the supervisor.

Informing supervisor as to the progress and training needs of employees and making suggestions 
as to disciplinary matters, promotions, reassignments, dismissals, and other personnel problems.

REQUIREMENTS:

Experience 

One year of experience in community service work involved in explaining the role of the local school 
system and related educational programs to residents of the community.

NOTE: Satisfactory completion of 30 semester hours of credit at an accredited college or 
university may be substituted for the required work experience.

License 

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation 
of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the 
position.

Knowledge 

Considerable knowledge of the procedures and policies of the local school system as well as 
knowledge of the needs, problems, attitudes, and behavior of members of the community with 
regard to the school system.

Considerable knowledge of educational programs designed for socially and educationally 
deprived school children.

Considerable knowledge of individual and group behavior.

Considerable knowledge of individual and community health and social problems as encountered 
by the local population as they relate to school age children, enrollment in the school system and 
class attendance by students.

Considerable knowledge of the objective and activities of a school system. Ability 

Ability to read, write, speak, understand or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties 
of the position. Communication may include such forms as American Sign Language or braille.

Ability to comprehend, and interpret the rules, regulations, policies, procedures and objectives of 
the organization.

Ability to identify and relate effectively to cultural and sociological differences as they exist in the 
local population.

Ability to collect and make correct appraisals of factual information and social relationships of 
individuals and families.

Ability to learn quickly the significant facts in an individual or family situation and to weigh and 
evaluate such facts.

Ability to prepare clear, sound, accurate and informative reports.

Ability to maintain needed records and files

Ability to organize assigned work and develop effective work methods.

Ability to work harmoniously with associates, parents, individuals, and community organizations.

Ability to organize and conduct workshops and group meetings.
