YARD SUPERVISOR
DEFINITION
Under direction, supervises and is responsible for the work performed
by employees who are engaged in such duties as stacking materials,
loading and unloading incoming and outgoing shipments of supplies,
materials, and equipment, sorting scrap materials for salvage, and
maintaining, repairing, and servicing motor vehicles and construction
equipment in a public works type of yard; does related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Supervises and coordinates activities of workers engaged in
receiving, storing, issuing, and maintaining equipment, materials,
and supplies.
Dispatches materials and equipment to construction site.
Requisitions materials and supplies.
Operates equipment to move material around the yard.
Supervises the work of employees engaged in the maintenance
and repair of vehicles and equipment.
Establishes schedules for proper and efficient methods of
maintaining vehicles, and reviews reports to ascertain that
schedule is being adhered to.
Establishes, maintains, and develops work plans and
procedures for equipment operators, truck drivers, yard workers,
and others assigned to the yard.
Assigns workers to specific equipment and tasks each day.
Details workers to keep the yard clean and orderly.
Supervises unloading, storing, and safeguarding of
equipment, materials, and supplies.
Supervises storing and safeguarding of snow plows and
equipment.
Dispatches equipment during snow removal operations.
Obtains, stores, safeguards, and distributes yard equipment,
materials, and supplies.
Maintains records of personnel, equipment, materials,
supplies, time, and cost.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
and/or manual recording and computerized information systems used
by the agency, office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
EXPERIENCE:
Five (5) years of experience in receiving, storing, and
distributing varied types of equipment, materials, and supplies,
and in the operation, maintenance, and repair of trucks and other
mechanized construction and maintenance equipment.
LICENSE:
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license
valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather
than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential
duties of the position.
Appointees may be required to possess a valid Commercial Driver's
License (CDL) and applicable endorsements for the class and type
of vehicle being operated.
NOTE: The responsibility for ensuring that employees possess the
required motor vehicle license, commensurate with the class and
type of vehicles they operate, rests with the Appointing Authority.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of problems and procedures for managing a public works
or construction type of yard.
Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of mechanized highway
and road construction and maintenance equipment.
Knowledge of technique of accomplishing designated objectives by
proper assignment of personnel and equipment.
Knowledge of the requisitioning, storing, safeguarding,
and distribution of construction and maintenance equipment,
materials, and supplies.
Knowledge of methods of loading and unloading trucks.
Knowledge of the maintenance of records of personnel,
equipment, materials, supplies, time, and cost.
Knowledge of varied factors entering into effective yard management.
Ability to analyze problems of yard management, organize assigned
work, and develop effective work plans.
Ability to make assignments of personnel to maintain and operate
trucks and other mechanized highway equipment.
Ability to work effectively with associates.
Ability to provide assignments and instruction to individuals and groups.
Ability to provide assistance when difficult and unusual problems arise.
Ability to check the work to see that proper procedures are followed,
that reasonable standards of workmanship and output are observed,
and that desired objectives are achieved.
Ability to obtain, store, safeguard, and distribute equipment, materials,
and supplies.
Ability to maintain proper records of personnel, equipment, materials,
supplies, time, and cost.
Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual
recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or
related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English
sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign
Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms
of communication.
