SENIOR MESSENGER
DEFINITION:
Under direction, performs the work involved in and takes the lead over other messenger(s) and/or other employees engaged in the receipt, sorting, collection, pick-up, and delivery of letters messages, packages, records, and other items and performs routine clerical work; does related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK
Performs most of the leadership functions described below:
Distributes and balances the workload among employees in accordance with established workflow or job specialization, assuring timely accomplishment of the assigned workload.
Observes the status and progress of the work and making necessary adjustments in accordance with established priorities, notifying the supervisor as to the works progress and status, and requesting advice or needed information as to problems that arise, passing on to the other workers the instructions received from the supervisor, and demonstrating proper work methods.
Answers questions of other workers regarding procedures, policies, regulations, and instructions, and instructing them in specific tasks and job techniques, checking on work in progress and completed to see whether the supervisor’s instructions have been carried out properly.
Answers question of the supervisor on overall work operations and problems.
Provides on-the-job training to new employees in accordance with established procedures and practices and informing them of available services and agency regulations.
Resolves simple informal complaints of employees and referring all others to the supervisor, informing the supervisor as to progress and training needs of employees and making suggestions regarding disciplinary matters, promotions, reassignments, dismissals, and other personnel problems.
Determines priority of delivery of letters, messages, packages, documents, etc.
Takes the lead over subordinate messenger employees.
Organizes and assigns routes for delivery of mail and other material.
Takes lead in the sorting and delivering of letters, messages, documents, packages, records, and other items.
Checks outgoing material for complete address.
Takes special and/or certified mail to Post Office as necessary.
Makes bank deposits and performs routine clerical tasks related to the completion of deposit slips, stop payments, etc.
Responsible for running errands of a confidential and/or high priority nature and obtains receipts for articles delivered.
Assists in stuffing envelopes, and wrapping packages for shipment by mail or express.
May drive a motor vehicle in order to deliver messages, packages, and documents.
Trains new messengers as needed.
In addition to the above tasks, may also perform as necessary other miscellaneous clerical tasks such as operating office duplicating equipment, lifting and emptying mail sacks, date stamping material, and filing documents.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
EXPERIENCE
One (1) year of experience in general clerical work and/or in the delivery of messages, documents, packages, records, letters, and other material.
LICENSE:
Appointees will be required to possess a driver’s license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of office methods, practices and equipment.
Ability to learn quickly from oral and written explanations and from demonstrations.
Ability to take needed safety precautions in performing the work.
Ability to perform simple clerical tasks.
Ability to take the lead over subordinate employees.
Ability to collect, sort, record, stamp, and deliver incoming and outgoing letters and packages.
Ability to maintain accurate records.
Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
