COMPUTER OPERATOR/ PURCHASING ASSISTANT
COMPUTER OPERATOR
DEFINITION
Under direction, monitors, controls, and operates a computer
console according to instructions; does other related duties as
required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Operates a console using operating system command set or
programmers command to enter run time parameters and other job
control instructions and information.
Sets control switches on computer and peripheral equipment such
as external memory, data communicating, synchronizing, and input
and output recording or display devices to integrate and operate
equipment according to program, routines, subroutines, and data
requirements specified in written operating instructions.
Loads input and output units with materials such as tapes, punch
cards, or printout forms for operating runs or oversees operators
of peripheral equipment who perform these functions.
Moves switches to clear system and start operation of equipment.
Observes machines and control panel on computer console for error
lights, verification printouts, error messages, machine stoppage,
or faulty output.
Types alternate commands into computer console according to
predetermined instructions to correct error or failure and resume
operations.
Notifies supervisor of errors or equipment stoppage.
Clears unit at end of operating run and reviews schedule to
determine next assignment.
Records operating and down time.
May control computer to provide input or output service for
another computer under instructions from operator of that unit.
Identifies causes of computer malfunctioning and confers with a
supervisor for necessary corrective action.
Determines correct procedure when program stoppage occurs and
attempts to ensure completion of program operation according to
directions or operations manual.
Maintains operating records such as machine performance,
production reports, data processing supplies, and inventories,
and disk/tape library records.
Operates related auxiliary equipment directly associated with the
computer.
Advises programmers of nature of operating malfunctions and
corrective action taken.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
and/or manual recording and information systems used by the
agency, office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
EXPERIENCE:
One (1) year of experience in the
operation of a mainframe/departmental sized computer console in a
computer room. (Experience in the operation of a personal
computer or LAN system will not be accepted.)
NOTE: Satisfactory completion of a
course of study in computer operations at an accredited college,
university, technical, or vocational school may be substituted
for one (1) year of work experience. (Training in the operation
of a personal computer will not be accepted).
LICENSE:
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license
valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather
than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential
duties of the position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of office procedures and functions.
Knowledge of digital computer equipment capabilities and
functions.
Knowledge of the operation of a computer and related peripheral
equipment.
Ability to analyze data.
Ability to reason logically and to draw sound conclusions in
recommending courses of action.
Ability to review and comprehend agency programs, processes, and
methods.
Ability to utilize accepted data processing procedures, methods,
and techniques.
Ability to work harmoniously with staff members and others.
Ability to prepare clear, concise, and accurate reports.
Ability to operate the control console of a digital computer
system.
Ability to read, interpret, and correctly respond to information
in the form in which it is transmitted through the computer
system.
Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual
recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or
related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in
English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.

PURCHASING ASSISTANT
DEFINITION
Under direction, compiles information to prepare purchase orders
for procurement of materials, supplies, equipment, or service,
reviews and edits purchase orders for proper description, number
identification, and completion, and records the requisition and
receipt of goods and services; does related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Maintains numerical and alphabetical coding of purchased material
and material in stock.
Reviews, edits, and records purchase orders for proper
description, number identification, and ensures correctness
before giving to buyer.
Receives and records invoices from vendors, checks to see that
goods have been delivered and then forwards to accounts/payable
section.
Keeps records of dispositions of purchase orders and invoices
received.
Compares, corrects, and updates nomenclatures and specifications
on purchase orders.
Checks unit price on purchase order for conformity to established
market prices.
Contacts vendors to expedite deliveries.
Contacts different divisions and projects to verify deliveries.
Consolidates procurement of materials and supplies for various
departments and projects.
Ensures that vendor ships correct supplies.
Make arrangements with vendors to correct situations involving
incorrect shipments.
Records letters of acknowledgment from vendors.
Reviews requisitions for materials not normally kept in inventory
for proper distribution code identification and ensures
correctness.
Receives, tabulates, and records requests for the purchase of
equipment, materials, and supplies.
Performs the clerical work involved in the preparation of
contracts following the awarding of bids.
Following the awarding of contracts, enters contract unit prices
into a contract price book.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
and/or manual recording and computerized information systems used
by the agency, office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:

materials, and/or supplies.
