CHIEF SECURITY GUARD
DEFINITION
Under direction, supervises security guards who protect public
property such as schools, libraries, museums, hospitals, housing
projects, parks, garages, storage or other public buildings,
facilities, and installations from fire, theft, vandalism, and
illegal/unauthorized entry and protect persons therein from harm; does
other related duties.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Confers with management representatives to coordinate security
programs with organization operations.
Prepares work schedules and assigns personnel to posts or patrol
according to size and nature of establishment and protection
requirements.
Interprets security rules and directs subordinates in enforcing
compliance such as overseeing security badge issuance, photographing
employees, and safekeeping forbidden articles brought by visitors.
Responds to calls from subordinates to direct activities during fires,
storms, riots, or other emergencies.
Inspects or directs inspection of premises to test alarm systems,
detect safety hazards, and ensure safety rule posting/enforcement.
Reports irregularities and hazards to appropriate personnel.
Cooperates with police, fire, and civil defense officials in problems
affecting the agency or jurisdiction and investigations of accidents
or criminal acts.
Develops and enforces security force rules/regulations within
guidelines, limitations, and framework of permissible security
functions established by higher management.
Plans weekly or monthly schedules and assigns personnel to watch or
patrol area and do tour of duty according to security needs of the
shifts, size of the property and/or buildings, and staff availability.
Interprets or explains standing security rules and directs
subordinates in enforcing compliance with rules for security badge
issuance, visitor entry, and so forth.
Is available round-the-clock for calls from subordinates during fires,
theft, or other emergencies pertaining to cause and proper guard
personnel response.
May operate a motor vehicle on a public highway to patrol, inspect, or
supervise the patrolling and inspecting of designated
buildings/grounds.
Selects and gives on-the-job training to guard personnel in protective
techniques/procedures, fire safety, first aid, and administrative
rules/regulations.
Maintains records relating to work logs, time schedules, incident
reports, and other security activities.
Instructs and supervises the security officer in proper methods of
directing traffic.
Directs investigation of all complaints involving misconduct,
suspicious behavior, and illegal activities on or in public
grounds/facilities.
Periodically checks fire alarms and other security devices such as
locks and burglar alarms.
Notes dangerous or unusual conditions that may affect human safety and
takes suitable action to rectify the condition.
Apprehends, warns, or takes into custody violators of the law.
Contacts local police force for aid in situations involving serious
disturbances or crimes.
Gives testimony in court concerning organization rule/regulation
violation and mishaps.
Prepares and supervises report preparation.
Directs establishment and maintenance of records and files.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency,
office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
EXPERIENCE:
Five (5) years of experience in the safeguarding of property
and/or persons, three (3) years of which shall have been in a
supervisory capacity.
LICENSE:
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid
in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee
mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of security measures used in
detaining persons.
Knowledge of procedures that are useful in making arrests and
prosecuting violators.
Knowledge of problems likely to be encountered in work involving care
and custody of varied types of persons deprived of their liberty.
Knowledge of problems involved in safeguarding persons, large areas
including buildings/grounds, and properties.
Knowledge of crowd control techniques for people congregating on
public property such as schools, libraries, museums, and parks.
Knowledge of security (including fire safety) requirements established
by the organization or jurisdiction.
Knowledge and understanding of current internal security problems.
Knowledge of security regulations, policies, and procedures needed for
protection of persons and property, and to prevent property theft.
Knowledge of the structure and operations of the organization served
or for which security protection is provided after a period of
training.
Knowledge of protective devices, facilities, procedures, and methods.

protective security.
