LAUNDRY MANAGER
DEFINITION:
Under direction, supervises the management of all functions,
facilities, services, and personnel associated with the operation
of a laundry; does other related duties as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Plans and directs the work of the institution laundry operations
and is responsible for the assignment, instruction, direction,
and supervision of laundry personnel.
Analyzes laundry operating problems and develops effective work
methods.
Is responsible for the proper performance of all laundry
operations.
Instructs and directs laundry personnel in classifying, washing,
drying, pressing, ironing, and checking laundry.
Supervises the operation of and individually operates washers,
extractors, dryers, water softeners, sterilizers, and other
equipment.
Supervises work operations and/or functional programs and has
responsibility for effectively recommending the hiring, firing,
promoting, demoting, and/or disciplining of employees.
Ensures that proper utilization is made of existing laundry
equipment, space, and staff and that all laundry equipment is
maintained in good working condition.
Supervises the preparation of and individually prepares starches,
blueing, and bleaches.
Prepares sterilizing compounds and soap and detergent mixtures.
Supervises and personally makes alkalinity and acidity tests.
Supervises the checking in and checking out of laundry.
Supervises the adjustment and minor maintenance of laundry
equipment.
Maintains and controls health, sanitary, and safety conditions
within the laundry.
Ensures that approved measures are taken for the care, custody,
safety, and well-being of residents assigned to laundry work.
Prepares requisitions for laundry equipment, materials, and
supplies.
Supervises work involved in keeping records of laundry
operations, personnel, time spent, and materials used.
Supervises the checking of requisitions for clothing and/or
linens and ensures that sufficient supples are on hand at all
times.
Prepares clear, sound, accurate, and informative statistical,
financial, cost, and other reports of the laundry operation
containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
and/or manual recording and information systems used by
the agency, office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
EXPERIENCE:
Four (4) years of experience in the various processes used
in a commercial or institution laundry, one (1) year of which
shall have been in a supervisory capacity.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of laundry methods and practices involved in the
processing of different types of materials.
Knowledge of and skill in the operation and maintenance of
washers, dryers, presses, water softeners, sterilizers, and other
laundry equipment.
Knowledge of preparation and use of various types of laundering
compounds and solutions.
Knowledge of varied types of laundry equipment, materials,
supplies, and processes and their advantages and disadvantages in
particular laundry situations.
Knowledge of commercial laundry equipment, materials, supplies,
methods, formulas, procedures, and problems and their application
to specific situations.
Ability to assign, instruct, and supervise supervisory staff and
plan, organize, and supervise training for new employees,
inmates, and/or patients assigned to the laundry program.
Ability to operate and supervise the operation of commercial type
laundry equipment including washers, extractors, dryers,
tumblers, and presses.
Ability to select washing soaps, detergents, bleaches, rinses,
and water temperatures for specific types of laundry.
Ability to assign and supervise laundry and linen room employees
and assigned patients and/or inmates.
Ability to instruct employees in the inspection, sorting,
marking, checking, folding, and distribution of laundry.
Ability to instruct patients or inmates in the use of sewing
machines for mending.
Ability to prepare records of laundry operations, personnel, time
spent, and materials used.
Ability to prepare statistical, financial, and other reports of
the laundry program containing findings, conclusions, and
recommendations.
Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual
recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or
related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in
English sufficiently to perform duties of this position.
American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as
acceptable forms of communication.
