GENERAL SUPERVISOR, SANITATION
DEFINITION
Under direction, supervises and works with a group of crew
supervisors and employees engaged in refuse collection and
disposal, and manual or mechanical street cleaning activities;
does other related duties as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Supervises and works with a group of crew supervisors and
employees engaged in refuse collection and disposal, and manual
or mechanical street cleaning activities.
Makes inspection tours.
Supervises the obtaining, storing, safeguarding, and distribution
of equipment, materials, and supplies.
Recommends acquisition of needed equipment, materials, and
supplies.
Develops effective work methods for staff.
Ensures proper use of equipment, materials, and supplies.
Prepares and maintains records and reports of personnel and work
done, equipment used, and time spent.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
and/or manual recording and information systems used by the
agency, office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
EXPERIENCE:
Three (3) years of experience in work involving the
collection and disposal of refuse, one (1) year of which shall
have been in a supervisory capacity.
LICENSE:
Appointees will be required to possess a driver=s license
valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather
than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties
of the position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of processes used in making municipal garbage
collection.
Knowledge of methods of routing trucks and assigning crew
supervisors and subordinates to effect prompt collections.
Knowledge of various types of tools, equipment, and materials
used in garbage and refuse collection.
Knowledge of procedures used in manual or mechanical street
cleaning activities.
Knowledge of methods used in maintaining records and files.
Ability to direct subordinates in procedures used, provide them
with needed advice and assistance when difficult and unusual
problems arise, and check their work to see that proper
procedures are followed, that reasonable standards of workmanship
and output are maintained, and that desired objectives are
achieved.
Ability to organize assigned work and develop effective work
methods.
Ability to handle complaints properly and effectively.
Ability to recommend proper remedial action.
Ability to prepare clear, sound, accurate, and informative
reports.
Ability to recommend the acquisition of needed equipment,
materials, and supplies.
Ability to maintain records and files of personnel, time spent,
work done, and costs.
Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual
recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or
related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in
English sufficiently to perform duties of this position.
American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as
acceptable forms of communication.
