Job Specification

BINDING SPECIALIST 3

DEFINITION:

Under direction, supervises, coordinates, and works with a 
group of Binding Specialists or others involved in the set-up, 
adjustment, operation and maintenance of machinery and/or 
equipment used to bind and repair books, magazines, 
pamphlets, catalogs and other printed materials; may 
supervise and inspect the work of staff performing highly 
skilled hand finishing operations to bind books; does other 
related duties as required.  

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

Supervises and works with Binding Specialists and others 
involved in the set-up, adjustment, operation and maintenance 
of machines and/or equipment used in binding operations such 
as pressing, folding, and trimming on books and related articles.

Supervises the work of staff performing highly skilled hand 
finishing operations such as grooving and lettering, to bind books.  

Inspects completed work.  

Reviews work orders to determine setup specifications and 
instructions.

Sets machine controls to adjust lengths and thicknesses of folds, 
stitches, or cuts, to synchronize speed of feeding devices and 
stitching, and to adjust tension on creasing blades and folding 
rollers.

Observes and monitors machine operations to detect malfunctions, 
and to determine whether adjustments are needed.

Performs trial runs to verify accuracy of machine setups.

Punches holes in paper sheets either manually or by machine.

Feeds books or other related articles such as periodicals and 
pamphlets into binding machines.  

Estimates and orders materials, arranges for safeguarding of 
equipment and supplies, and enforces safety standards.  

Assigns work to volunteers, clients, inmates or seasonal help.  

Fastens sheets, signatures, or other printed materials together 
using hand or machine stapler, or adjusts or tends machine that 
inserts wire or plastic binding strips into punched holes to fasten 
pages and cover together.  

Examines stitched, collated, bound, and unbound product samples 
for defects such as imperfect bindings, ink spots, torn or loose 
pages, and loose and uncut threads.

Creases or compresses signatures before affixing covers; places 
paper jackets on finished books.

Wraps product in plastic using a shrink wrapping machine or other 
similar equipment.  

Places catalog numbers on book bindings.  

Schedules the use of equipment or facilities. 
 
May assign work to volunteers, clients, inmates or seasonal help.  

Supervises work operations and/or functional programs, and 
has responsibility for employee evaluations and for effectively 
recommending the hiring, firing, promoting,  demoting,  and/or 
disciplining of employees.

Maintains a clean and orderly work station.  

Lubricates and cleans machine parts; makes minor 
repairs/adjustments to keep machines in working condition.

Imprints and embosses lettering, designs, or numbers on 
covers, using gold, silver, or colored foil, and stamping machines.

Inserts book bodies in devices that form back edges of books 
into convex shapes and produce grooves that facilitate attachment 
of covers.

Mends books and other printed materials by repairing tears and 
hinges, recasing, signature repairing, cleaning, patching pages, 
making pockets, and repairing spiral binders.  

Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic 
and/or manual recording and computerized information systems 
used by the agency, office, or related units.

REQUIREMENTS:

EXPERIENCE:

Three (3) years of experience in work involving the operation 
of bindery equipment.

LICENSE:

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid 
in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than 
employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties 
of the position.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of the techniques and equipment used to bind books, 
booklets, pamphlets and other printed materials.

Knowledge of the methods and procedures used to repair books,
 booklets, pamphlets and other printed materials.

Ability to set-up, operate, adjust and maintain the machinery and 
equipment used in the binding and repair of books, magazines, 
pamphlets, catalogs and other printed materials.  

Ability to supervise employees and evaluate their work performance.  

Ability to maintain a clean and orderly work station.   

Ability to follow established safety procedures when operating 
bindery machinery or other related equipment.  

Ability to maintain essential records and files.

Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual 
recording and information systems used by the agency, office, 
or related units.

Ability to read, write, understand and communicate in English 
sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.  American 
Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable 
forms of communication.
