GENERAL SUPERVISOR STREETS
DEFINITION
Under direction supervises Supervisor, Streets and other
employees engaged in the construction, maintenance, cleaning, and
repair of streets; does other related duties as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Directs subordinates in sweeping and shoveling accumulations into
containers and onto trucks; in loading, unloading, and applying
sand and street repair materials where needed; in cutting brush
and mowing grass and in emptying refuse containers, loading
refuse, and disposing of refuse at an assigned place.
Prepares work schedules to accomplish required tasks.
Gives assignments to employees.
Gives needed advice and assistance when difficult and unusual
problems arise.
Inspects and checks work completed to see that proper procedures
are followed, that reasonable standards of workmanship and output
are maintained, and that desired objectives are achieved.
Receives complaints dealing with street repair or maintenance
work and takes proper remedial action.
Plans and organizes procedures to be followed for emergency
repairs.
Plans and supervises the grading of streets, location and
installation of curbs, and construction of driveways.
Makes surveys of needed street improvements and repairs and makes
appropriate remedial recommendations.
Obtains and supervises the storing, safeguarding, and use of
equipment, materials, and supplies.
Prepares reports.
Maintains records of time, costs, work done, and materials used.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
and/or manual recording and information systems used by the
agency, office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
EXPERIENCE:
Four (4) years experience in the construction, maintenance,
and repair of streets, one (1) year of which shall have been in a
supervisory capacity.
LICENSE:
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license
valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather
than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties
of the position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of processes used in cleaning, maintaining, and
repairing streets.
Knowledge of varied equipment, materials, and supplies used in
cleaning, maintaining, and repairing streets.
Knowledge of complex mechanical and manual operations.
Knowledge of methods of caring for equipment and materials used
in maintaining and repairing streets.
Ability to direct subordinates in effective procedures used in
cleaning, maintaining, and repairing streets, provide them with
needed advice and assistance when difficult and unusual problems
arise, and inspect their work to ensure that proper procedures
are followed, that reasonable standards of workmanship and output
are maintained, and that the desired objectives are achieved.
Ability to organize assigned work and develop effective work
methods, to handle complaints properly and effectively, and to
recommend proper remedial action.
Ability to supervise personally extensive and complicated street
repair work.
Ability to make inspections of repair work to ensure proper use
of municipal funds and personnel.
Ability to prepare clear, sound, accurate, and informative
reports of investigations containing findings, conclusions, and
recommendations.
Ability to maintain records and files of personnel, time spent,
work done, and costs.
Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual
recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or
related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in
English sufficiently to perform duties of this position.
American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as
acceptable forms of communication.
