ASSISTANT SUPERVISOR, PUBLIC WORKS
DEFINITION
Under direction, assists in supervising and works with a group of
employees engaged in the construction, operation, maintenance,
and repair of multiple public works facilities such as streets,
sewers or water service, sanitation, parks, sewage or water
treatment plants, or other public works operations; may be
required to operate, check, service, and make minor repairs to
trucks and other maintenance/construction equipment; does other
related duties as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Supervises and works with employees engaged in loading,
unloading, and applying sand and street repair materials.
Supervises and works with employees engaged in cutting brush,
mowing grass, emptying refuse containers, loading refuse, and
disposing of refuse at an assigned place.
Assigns and works with employees in repairing/maintaining water
pipes, mains, valves, and hydrants.
Ensures that safety precautions are followed and that procedures
are taken to protect the public from injury during repair
activities.
May inspect completed work to ensure that procedures were
followed, that reasonable standards of workmanship/output were
maintained, and that desired objectives were achieved.
May supervise employees involved in the operation, adjustment,
and regulation of sewage and/or water treatment plants and other
related facilities.
Assumes all authority/responsibilities in the absence of the
Supervisor, Public Works.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
and/or manual recording and information systems used by the
agency, office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
EXPERIENCE:
Three (3) years of experience in the construction,
maintenance, and/or repair of streets, sewer, water, sanitation, or
other public works facilities or similar heavy construction.
LICENSE:
Appointees may be required to possess a valid, appropriate
license issued by the NJ Department of Environmental Protection
for the operation of a sewage disposal and treatment plant,
public water supply system, or a public water treatment plant.
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license
valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather
than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties
of the position.
Appointees may be required to possess a valid Commercial
Driver's License (CDL) and applicable endorsements for the
class and type of vehicle being operated.
NOTE: The responsibility for ensuring that employees possess
the required motor vehicle license, commensurate with the class
and type of vehicles they operate, rests with the Appointing
Authority.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of procedures, materials, and tools used in cleaning,
maintaining, and repairing street, sewer, and water sanitation
facilities, sewage plant equipment, pumps, and water treatment
plant equipment.
Ability to direct subordinates, provide them advice/assistance
when difficult/unusual problems arise, and check their work to
see that proper procedures are followed and that desired
objectives are achieved.
Ability to organize assigned work and develop effective work
methods.
Ability to maintain records and files.
Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual
recording and information systems used by the agency,
office, or related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate
in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position.
American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered
as acceptable forms of communication.
