GENERAL SUPERVISOR ROADS
DEFINITION:
Under direction, supervises employees involved in the
construction, maintenance, and repair of roads, culverts, drains,
and related structures; does other related duties as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Aids in executing plans for effective utilization of personnel,
equipment, materials, and supplies.
Organizes and develops work programs for varied functions
of the department.
Gives assignments and instructions to individuals and groups
and supervises their work.
Supervises employees engaged in the work involved in the
construction, maintenance, and repair of roads, drains, catch
basins, culverts, and related structures.
Makes investigations of complaints and takes proper action
to see that needed repairs are made with a minimum delay.
Supervises work involved in the construction of various types
of drainage systems, manholes, new guard rails, and all types
of curbing.
Supervises work involved in making repairs to road pavements,
and minor and major restoration of disintegrated portions of
concrete, bituminous concrete, sheet asphalt, and other types
of pavement.
Supervises work involved in making repairs to and reconstruction
of paved and unpaved road shoulders, and maintenance and
clearing of rights of way including maintenance of grass areas.
Supervises work involved in repairing and rebuilding guard rails,
fences, and walls and the painting thereof.
Supervises work involved in the removal of snow and sanding
and salting of icy roads.
Supervises work involved in locating and installing curbs.
Ensures that proper safety precautions are taken by employees
at work.
Inspects and checks work in progress or completed to see
that proper procedures are followed.
Prepares reports.
Obtains, stores, safeguards, and supervises the proper use
of equipment, materials, and supplies.
Keeps records and files.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
and/or manual recording and information systems used by
the agency, office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
EXPERIENCE:
Four (4) years of experience in work involving the construction,
maintenance, and repair of roads, one (1) year of which shall
have been in a supervisory capacity.
LICENSE:
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid
in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than
employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties
of the position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of procedures used in cleaning and maintaining
buildings and in repairing roads, culverts, drains, structures,
and of the varied equipment materials and supplies used in
these processes.
Knowledge of methods of caring for equipment and materials.
Ability to organize assigned work, and give assignments and
instructions to groups and individuals.
Ability to prepare reports.
Ability to keep records and files.
Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual
recording and information systems used by the agency, office,
or related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in
English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American
Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable
forms of communication.
