GENERAL SUPERVISOR, PARKS
DEFINITION
Under direction, supervises work of subordinate supervisors and
other employees in the care and maintenance of parks; does other
related duties as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Supervises and coordinates activities of lower level
supervisors/staff engaged in maintenance of areas such
as parks, botanical gardens, and playgrounds.
Plans landscaping tasks, and instructs workers in the care of
nursery, planting of flowers, and transplanting and pruning of
trees/shrubbery.
Directs lower level supervisors/staff in maintenance and repair
of driveways, walks, hedges, swings, benches, and other park
equipment.
Assigns daily tasks to park employees, and assists with and
supervises their work including servicing of public facilities
and repair/maintenance of parks, buildings, and landscaping.
Directs and supervises lower level supervisors/staff engaged in
grading grass plots, sowing grass seeds, weeding and mowing
lawns, pruning/spraying trees, trimming shrubbery, planting and
caring for flowers, cutting hedges, and sweeping/cleaning walks
and paths.
Sees that snow is shoveled from paths in winter.
Prepares and executes plans for utilization of personnel,
equipment, materials, and supplies as they relate to
maintenance/care of parks.
May operate a variety of equipment/machinery used in
care/maintenance of parks.
Ensures that proper standards of workmanship/output are followed
by employees in accord with established procedures and safety
guidelines.
Organizes, develops, and implements work programs and schedules.
Serves as resource person with regard to operation of
equipment/machinery used in parks.
Conducts periodic inspections of equipment, machinery, and tools
used to determine and implement proper maintenance/repair
schedules.
Prepares work, personnel, and operations schedules, and
implements same accordingly.
Prepares clear, sound, accurate and informative reports containing
findings, conclusions and recommendations.
Conducts and supervises the maintenance of essential records
and files.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or
manual recording and information systems used by the agency,
office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
EXPERIENCE:
Three (3) years of experience involving care and maintenance
of large tracts of grounds including planting and care of
shrubbery/flowers and use of grounds by a considerable number
of people, one (1) year of which shall have been in a supervisory
capacity.
LICENSE:
Appointees will be required to possess a driver’s license valid
in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than
employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties
of the position.
NOTE: Appointees may be required to possess a valid Commercial
Driver's License (CDL) and applicable endorsements for the class
and type of vehicle being operated. The responsibility for ensuring
that appointees possess the required motor vehicle license and
applicable endorsement rests with the Appointing Authority.
NOTE: Appointees may be required to possess a Pesticide Applicator
Certification in the appropriate category/ies issued by the New Jersey
Department of Environmental Protection. The responsibility for ensuring
that appointees possess the required certification rests with the Appointing
Authority.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of procedures for keeping parks in good repair, and
of planting/caring for grass, flowers, and shrubbery.
Knowledge of procedures used in assigning employees to
maintain/repair parks, allocating/maintaining park equipment,
materials, and supplies, and of keeping personnel, equipment,
and other records.
Knowledge of problems, procedures, and methods used in
inspecting, analyzing, and determining work to be done.
Knowledge of various types of equipment and methods used
in caring for park areas.
Knowledge of uses made of public parks.
Knowledge of rules/regulations governing operation of public
parks.
Knowledge of procedures used in cleaning/maintaining parks.
Knowledge of problems involved in establishing, maintaining,
and developing effective work programs and work procedures.
Knowledge of problems involved in giving assignments/instructions
to groups and individuals and in supervising their work.
Ability to utilize advantageously available personnel and
equipment in care/maintenance of parks.
Ability to give assignments/instructions to individuals and
groups of employees, provide them with needed advice/assistance
when difficult and unusual problems arise, and check their work
to see that proper procedures are followed, that reasonable
standards of workmanship/output are maintained, and that desired
objectives are achieved
Ability to supervise planting and care of trees, shrubbery, and
flowers.
Ability to prepare clear, sound, accurate and informative reports
containing findings, conclusions and recommendations.
Ability to conduct and supervise the maintenance of essential
records and files.
Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual
recording and information systems used by the agency, office,
or related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in
English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American
Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable
forms of communication.
