Job Specification

CAMP DIRECTOR  

DEFINITION:

Under direction, has charge of administers and directs the activities of a camp; does related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

Develops and administers budgets related to the operation of the camp facility.

Supervises, trains and evaluates all subordinate counselors and other camp personnel.

Directs the work operations and/or functional programs carried out at the camp site and recommends the hiring, firing, promoting and/or disciplining of employees.

Supervises and plans a well-balanced program of camp activities including crafts, swimming, boating, games, nature study, music, hiking, fishing, archery, etc.

Reviews, up-dates and enforces all procedures relative to camping, health, safety, transportation, and other operational requirements of the facility.

Maintains an adequate food service program to assure that food is properly selected, prepared and served.

Plans and conducts varied types of activities designed to stimulate interest in the camp and its activities.

Plans and develops an effective safety program designed to eliminate hazardous conditions.

Prepare the necessary reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.

Plans programs of recreational and educational activities.

Hires and supervises camp staff.

Arranges for required licenses, certificates, and insurance coverage to meet health, safety, and welfare standards for campers and for camp operation.

Keeps records regarding finances, personnel actions, enrollments, and program activities related to camp business operations and budget allotments.

REQUIREMENTS:

NOTE: Applicants must meet one of the following or a combination of both experience and education. Thirty (30) semester hour credits are equal to one (1) year of relevant experience.

Seven (7) years of professional supervisory experience in the operation of a camp.

OR

Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; and three (3) years of the above-mentioned professional supervisory experience.

OR

Possession of a valid and current certificate as a Camp Director issued by the American Camping Association; and three (3) years of the above-mentioned professional supervisory experience.

NOTE: "Professional experience" refers to work that is creative, analytical, evaluative, and interpretive; requires a range and depth of specialized knowledge of the profession's principles, concepts, theories, and practices; and is performed with the authority to act according to one's own judgment and make accurate and informed decisions.

LICENSE:

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge and familiarity with various camping activities and programs.

Knowledge of the problems and needs of those individuals and groups using the camp facilities.

Knowledge of the methods for planning camping activities and programs.

Knowledge of effective supervisory and management techniques.

Knowledge of the standards and the health, safety and other regulations pertaining to the operation of a camp.

Ability to organize assigned camp management work, analyze the problems which arise in directing a camp program and develop appropriate work programs and procedures.

Ability to plan and conduct the operations of a camp serving various types of individuals.

Ability to supervise the maintenance and care of the camp site and all of its facilities and equipment including all housekeeping activities.

Ability to supervise the selection, storage, preparation and serving of meals to camp participants and staff.

Ability to ascertain the needs and interests of camp participants.

Ability to plan recreational and other camp programs and activities.

Ability to develop and prepare an operating budget.

Ability to select and hire camp staff, assign and train them in the performance of their assigned tasks, guide and instruct the staff and supervise and evaluate their work performance.

Ability to work harmoniously with camp employees and coordinate staff functions and efforts into an effective camping program.

Ability to develop and direct appropriate safety measures to safeguard camp participants.

Ability to develop and stimulate the interest and cooperation of individuals and groups in the activities and programs of the camp.

Ability to prevent vandalism or other harm to camp areas and buildings.

Ability to draft correspondence in the course of official duties.

Ability to prepare clear, sound, accurate and informative statistical, financial, and other reports of the camp containing findings, conclusions and recommendations.

Ability to supervise the maintenance of essential records and files.

Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
