COMMUNITY AIDE SCHOOLS/TEACHER AIDE
COMMUNITY AIDE SCHOOLS
DEFINITION:
Under direction, serves as a liaison between a school district
and the local community; assists, on a non-professional level,
teachers and certified staff members in interpreting the role of
a school system and related educational programs to parents and
other community members; does other related duties.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Visits families of school age children in order to provide
information on enrollment, attendance, and other programs
and services available through the school district; to enroll the
eligible students in the school system or follow-up on truant
students.
Interviews family members and students in order to gather
information to be used to determine the need or eligibility for
programs and services.
Completes forms, questionnaires and other necessary documentation
to enroll students, document their attendance and other
activities, and prepare correspondence, reports, and other
documentation necessary for the operation of the student
enrollment or attendance programs.
Identifies students in need of supportive or special services and
refers students to other personnel and/or agencies, in order to
address their needs; follows up on the referrals made in order
to assure that necessary services are provided.
Helps the school involve parents in the activities of the
children and to encourage attendance.
Develops an interest among parents in the school system.
Encourages parents to participate in group discussions and
activities.
Aides in the explanation of school and program goals and
objectives to the community.
Confers and works with school principals, teachers, guidance and
other professional staff, as well as parents and other concerned
individuals, regarding problems affecting the students' progress,
attendance, achievements, behavior, personal wellbeing or other
school related problems they may be experiencing.
Assists in the interpretation of school and program policies,
regulations or activities to the students and their parents.
Arranges visits, conferences, workshops, and other activities, in
order to promote the goals and objectives of school programs.
Serves as liaison between the parents and the school district and
maintains liaison with social agencies committed to the welfare of
the student.
Escorts students home or to other agencies and activities
whenever required.
Develops rapport with students, their parents and school
officials in the interest of promoting the proper adjustment
and progress of the students.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
and/or manual recording and information systems used by
the agency, office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
LICENSE:
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid
in New Jersey only if the operation of vehicle, rather than
employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of
the position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of individual and group behavior.
Knowledge of individual and community health and social problems
encountered by the local population as they relate to school age
children, enrollment in the school system and class attendance by
students.
Knowledge of the objectives and activities of a school system.
Knowledge of the keeping of necessary records and files.
Knowledge of the problems encountered, and purpose and
practices of agencies providing social and educational services.
Ability to comprehend the rules, regulations, policies, procedures
and objectives of the organization.
Ability to work harmoniously with associates, families,
individuals and social organizations.
Ability to identify and relate effectively to cultural and
sociological differences as they exist in the local population.
Ability to collect and make correct appraisals of factual
information and social relationships of individuals and families.
Ability to learn quickly the significant facts in an individual
or family situation and to weigh and evaluate such facts.
Ability to prepare clear, sound, accurate and informative
reports.
Ability to maintain needed records and files.
Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual
recording and information systems used by the agency, office,
or related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate
in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American
Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable
forms of communication.

TEACHER AIDE
DEFINITION
Under direction, provides direct aide to teachers or other
certificated staff members; assists in the classroom activities
of school children; does other related duties.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Provides direct aide to classroom teachers in maintaining a
neat, orderly classroom, in specific programs such as health
and physical education, in the preparation of a laboratory and
audiovisual program, in reading to children, and in accompanying
singing and dancing with music instruments.
Monitors classroom if teacher leaves for brief periods.
Arranges indoor games.
Corrects standardized and informal tests.
Helps students who were absent or who need additional attention
with work assignments.
Works with individual children or small groups in developing
simple understanding skills or appreciation.
May aid in drill work with word, phrase, and number flash cards.
Performs clerical duties including taking attendance, typing,
copying, and keeping records of nonconfidential data.
Collects money and regulates behavior of students in the lunch
room.
Prepares bulletin boards.
Aids disabled children.
May assist in maintaining decorum in cafeteria, playground,
study halls, gym, and locker rooms.
Monitors classrooms.
Directs children to buses.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
and/or manual recording and information systems used by
the agency, office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
NOTE: Appointees to positions in school districts receiving
Title 1 Federal funding must meet the following educational
requirements.
EDUCATION:
Sixty (60) semester hour credits at an institution of higher education.
OR
Graduation from an accredited college or university with an
Associates degree.
OR
As per No Child Left Behind (NCLB) requirements, must meet
a rigorous standard of quality and can demonstrate, through a
formal State or local academic assessment:
(i) Knowledge of, and the ability to assist in instructing, reading,
writing, and mathematics; or
(ii) Knowledge of, and the ability to assist in instructing, reading
readiness, writing readiness, and mathematics readiness,
as appropriate.
LICENSE:
