DAY CARE CENTER WORKER BILINGUAL IN SPANISH AND ENGLISH
DEFINITION
Under direction, carries out assigned duties in the areas of
education, recreation, self-help, social training, and other
related duties; performs various nonprofessional basic care
duties and may drive or ride Day Care Center vehicles and
supervises the children transported on these vehicles; does other
related duties .

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

Assumes responsibility for the physical, mental, and emotional
well-being of assigned children.
Communicates with those who are not knowledgeable of both English
and Spanish.
Serves meals to children and assists those unable to help
themselves.
Provides whatever assistance is required by children to ensure
adequate standards of personal hygiene.
Maintains a childcare program in the center setting with
particular emphasis on self-help and social development to the
limit of the individual's ability.
Maintains active recreation and social programs and participates
in outdoor and indoor recreation activities with participants.
Provides assistance to those in charge in carrying out special
health or informational programs for participants.
Sees that proper measures are taken at all times to eliminate
actual and potential hazards to the safety of the participants.
Escorts participants to recreation, activity areas, and other
center areas as may be required.
Notifies the supervisor when irregularities, suspicious
conditions, accidents, illness, and/or fires occur.
May drive a vehicle to and from the day care center.
Prepares reports.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
and/or manual recording and information systems used by the
agency, office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
EXPERIENCE:
One (1) year of experience in the direct care and/or
supervision of activities of children in an institution, day care
center, or other related community program.
NOTE: Thirty (30) semester hour credits in education or
psychology from an accredited college or university may be
substituted for the indicated experience.
SPECIAL SKILL
Applicants must be able to read, write, speak, understand,
and communicate in English and Spanish sufficiently to perform
duties of this position.
LICENSE:
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license
valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather
than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties
of the position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of specific problems encountered in the nonprofessional
care of persons attending childcare centers.
Knowledge of the housekeeping, safety, and sanitation problems
likely to be encountered in a center, and of the procedures,
methods, and equipment required for solution or alleviation.
Knowledge of techniques used in helping individuals in the area
of self-care and socially accepted behavior.
Knowledge of physical, mental, and emotional needs of children
and of procedures and methods required to provide for such needs.
Ability to organize assigned center-training work, analyze
problems, and develop appropriate work methods.
Ability to assist with and participate in outdoor and indoor
social and recreation activities.
Ability to provide assistance required by children and to
maintain prescribed standards of personal hygiene.
Ability to assist children at mealtime.
Ability to lift children who are not ambulant or are
semiambulant.
Ability to keep rooms and other areas in a clean, neat, and
orderly condition.
Ability to comprehend and interpret to persons in the
neighborhood of varying ethic groups, economic status, and
educational levels the purpose of the Day Care Program.
Ability to notify the proper supervisory officers when unusual
cases, irregularities, accidents, fires, and/or illnesses occur.
Ability to understand, remember, and carry out oral and written
instructions and assignments and to organize work in an efficient
manner.
Ability to work harmoniously with associates and superiors, and
to be compassionate and understanding with children.
Ability to prepare reports.
Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual
recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or
related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in
English and Spanish sufficiently to perform duties of this
position.
