Job Specification

SENIOR MASON

 DEFINITION:

 Under direction, performs all general masonry involved in the
 maintenance and construction of block, stone, and brick surfaces and
 structures; works with various machines and hand tools common to the
 masonry trade; may prepare or work from sketches, plans, and
 specifications in accordance with building code or accepted trade
 practices; provides technical advice, guidance and instructions to
 journey-level masons; does other related duties.

 EXAMPLES OF WORK:

 Provides technical advice and instructions and performs the work
 involved in the maintenance, repair, alterations, and construction of
 block, stone, and brickwork of varying complexity such as masonry
 walls, columns, walks, chimneys, circular smokestacks, fireplaces,
 elevator shafts, manholes, furnace walls, boilers, and catch basins.

 Works with items such as natural cut and artificial stone, lintels,
 common and face brick, insulating brick, firebrick, refractory tile,
 cinder and cement block, glass block, mortar beds, fire-resistant
 mortar, and fire clay; trowel, plumbline, level, wedges, brick or
 napping hammer, brick or skill saw, axe, pick, chisel, hard-rubber
 mallet, and tuck pointer.

 Interprets blueprints and rough sketches.

 Fastens brick or terra cotta veneer to face of structure using tie
 wire or anchor holes.

 Lays masonry material around windows and doorways.

 Lays cut stone in the repair and construction of masonry structures
 and surfaces and sorts stone by size and shape.

 Cuts and shapes brick.

 Works with various machine and hand tools common to the trade.

 Obtains, stores and safeguards equipment, materials and supplies.

 Computes estimates of time, materials and equipment.

 Inspects current and completed projects for conformity with applicable
 plans, specifications, and codes.

 Provides technical advice, guidance and instructions to other masons.

 Maintains records.

 Prepares reports.

 Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
 and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency,
 office, or related units.

 REQUIREMENTS:

          EXPERIENCE:

          Four (4) years of experience in masonry work performing a
 variety of tasks involving the use of brick, stone, concrete, and
 plaster materials.

          LICENSE:

          Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid
 in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee
 mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

 KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

 Knowledge of the methods used in the maintenance, repair, alteration
 and construction of masonry structures and surfaces.

 Knowledge of standard tools and materials used in masonry work.

 Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions involved
 in masonry work.

 Ability to analyze masonry problems.

 Ability to work with tools of the trade.

 Ability to cut and shape brick, blocks, and stone for masonry
 construction and repair.

 Ability to perform the work involved in the maintenance, repair,
 alteration and construction of masonry structures and surfaces.

 Ability to interpret blueprints and sketches.

 Ability to take the safety precautions related to the trade.

 Ability to obtain, store, and safeguard equipment, materials, and
 supplies.

 Ability to provide technical advice, guidance and instructions.

 Ability to establish and maintain records and files.

 Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording
 and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

 Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English
 sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign
 Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of
 communication.
