Job Specification

SUPERVISING GLAZIER

DEFINITION:

Under direction, supervises glaziers in the performance of a variety of 
glazing tasks; performs, assists and/or supervises in the more difficult 
or unusual installation of glass, glass-like and other glazing materials in 
windows, doors, skylights or other areas of buildings, does other related 
duties as required.

NOTE:  The examples of work for this title are for illustrative purposes only.  
A particular position using this title may not perform all duties listed in the 
job specification.  Conversely, all duties performed on the job may not be

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

Inspects, analyzes and determines the scope of work on glazing projects.

Provides estimates of labor and material costs and start and completion 
dates.

Orders and receives glazing materials, equipment and tools necessary to 
complete glazing jobs.

Gives suitable assignments and instructions to subordinates.

Prepares and maintains records, reports and files of time and materials 
used on projects.

Supervises and/or may perform work involving the installation or repair of 
glass, glass-like, or related materials in a variety of structural elements of 
a building  such as doors, windows, skylights, store fronts or curtain walls.

Cuts to size and prepares glass or glass-like products such a Polished 
Wire Glass, Hammer Wire, Single, Double or Triple-paned glass, 
laminated or tinted glass, Lexan or other polycarbonate products for new 
or replacement installations.

Sets glass in metal, vinyl or wooden frame, insulates when necessary, and 
completes installation using materials such as shims, putty, glazier’s point, 
clips, counterweights, ropes, caulking, trim or flashing.

Inspects the structural elements of a building containing glass, glass-like 
and related materials such as doors, windows, skylights, store fronts or 
curtain walls for defects or damage.

Prepares and maintains records, reports and files of time and materials 
used on specific projects.

Ensures that proper safety standards and measures are utilized and 
maintained on all projects.

Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or 
manual recording and information systems used by the agency, 
office or related units.

REQUIREMENTS:

EXPERIENCE:

Five (5) years of experience in glazier work performed in commercial 
or institutional buildings.

LICENSE:

Appointees will be required to possess a driver’s license valid in 
New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee 
mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITITES

Knowledge of glazing products, materials and procedures used in 
commercial or institutional buildings.

Knowledge of how to inspect, analyze and determine the scope of 
work on glazing projects.

Knowledge of how to estimate labor and material costs and start and 
completion dates involved in glazing.

Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions in 
the repair and installation of glazing specific structural elements in 
commercial and institutional buildings.

Knowledge of the problems and possible solutions involved in glazing 
work.

Ability to prepare and maintain records, reports and files of time and 
materials used on projects.

Ability to take needed health and safety measures in performing the work.

Ability to obtain, store, safeguard, distribute and properly use needed 
equipment, materials and supplies

Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual records and 
information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English 
sufficiently to perform duties of this position.  American Sign Language 
or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
