SENIOR RECYCLING OPERATOR
DEFINITION
Under direction, operates a variety of complex equipment to
transport, mix, turn, move, and arrange a mixture of substances
in a recycling facility; may take the lead over one or more
Recycling Operators; does other related duties.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
May distribute and balance workload among employees in accordance
with established workflow or job specialization; may ensure timely
accomplishment.
Observes the status and progress of the work; makes necessary
adjustments in accordance with established priorities; notifies
the supervisor as to the work's progress and status; requests
advice or needed information regarding problems that arise,
relays supervisory instructions to other workers; and
demonstrates proper work methods.
Answers questions of other workers regarding procedures,
policies, regulations, and instructions; instructs workers in
specific tasks and job techniques.
May check on work in progress and completed work to determine
whether supervisory instructions have been accurately followed.
Responds to supervisory questions regarding overall work
operations and problems.
May orient new employees in accordance with established procedures
and practices, and inform them of available services and agency
regulations.
May resolve simple informal complaints of employees and refers all
others to the supervisor.
May inform supervisor as to the progress and training needs of
employees and make suggestions as to disciplinary matters,
promotions, reassignments, dismissals, and other personnel
problems.
Operates skid steer loaders and front-end loaders to move material
and load or unload trucks.
May operate a tub grinder to grind leaves and brush.
May operate a rotary screen to remove foreign matter such as sticks,
stones, metals, etc. and retain usable compost.
May operate specialzed vehicles including, but not limited to, roll off trucks,
water trucks, tank tractor trailers and blower trucks.
May operate a bulldozer, track loader or grader.
May operate a windrow compost turner to aerate compost piles.
Uses hand and power tools to clean the area, maintain equipment,
and perform related tasks.
May drive a dump truck to transport material. and equipment, plow snow
and for other purposes as assigned.
May drive a flatbed truck to transport equipment to worksite.
May operate a street sweeper to clean facility property and connecting
roadways.
May independently operate a truck mounted hydraulic boom to lift
and dump containers and/or material into truck body or machinery,
exercising care to avoid contact by boom with overhead power lines.
Performs minor repair and maintenance to equipment, tools, and
vehicles.
Adds fuel, oil, coolant and water to trucks and other powered equipment.
Cleans tools, equipment, and work area.
Prepares reports on activities performed as assigned.
Ensures that the equipment is ready for operation at all times by
inspecting and lubricating moving parts; adding fuel, oil, and coolant
as needed; inspecting tires for proper inflation and adding air as required;
checking brake hydraulic reservoir level and oil level and making a
general inspection of the entire equipment for any obvious deficiencies.
Reads instructional and operational manuals for lubrication,
adjustment, and repair procedures on assigned equipment to
prevent excessive strains and wear of vital parts.
Performs a variety of manual, unskilled laboring tasks and work
assignments when not engaged in operation of equipment.
Reports any problems that cause a delay in the completion of the
work assignment to the supervisory, either in writing or orally.
Receives assignments either in writing or orally explaining the
work to be done and the equipment to be used to know the
specifics of the assigned tasks.
May give instructions, guidance, or advice to other workers and
oversees the performance of their job assignments.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
and/or manual recording and information systems used by the
agency, office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
EXPERIENCE:
Two (2) years of experience in operating one or more types
of gasoline or diesel powered mobile equipment used for
excavation, grading, paving, earth moving, or hoisting, or in
operating similar types of motorized construction equipment.
LICENSE:
Appointees will be required to possess a valid Commercial
Driver's License (CDL) and applicable endorsements for the class
and typed of vehicle being operated.
KNOWLEDGES AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of solid waste and recyclable material handling and
processing methods.
Knowledge of mechanical functioning of large-scale equipment.
Knowledge of the equipment and methods used to transport,
transfer, and collect both solid waste and recyclable materials.
Knowledge of the use of different sets of controls for operating
equipment and attachments.
Knowledge of adjusting, oiling, greasing, fueling, and maintaining
various equipment to ensure good working conditions.
Knowledge of sight inspection procedures used to ensure safe
operation of the equipment.
Ability to follow specific oral or written instructions concerning the
work assignments.
Ability to work without close and constant supervision in performing
work assignments.
Ability to handle different sets of controls used to operate
various equipment.
Ability to move eyes, hands, and feet together to control
movement of equipment and estimate distances.
Ability to adjust, oil, grease, fuel, and maintain assigned equipment.
Ability to sight inspect equipment to ensure safe operation of
equipment.
Ability to comprehend the various functional phases of machinery
utilized in shredding, processing, and disposing of solid waste and
recyclable material.
Ability to perform routine and complex mechanical and manual
operations.
Ability to maintain accurate records.
Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual
recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or
related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in
English sufficiently to perform duties of this position.
American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as
acceptable forms of communication.
